Removal of 2nd Cat on 50 State Legal?

I was wondering if it was possible to remove the 2nd catalytic converter on my 50 state legal 4Runner? I don't live in California and we don't even have smog tests here.

Does anyone sell a straight through pipe that would eliminate the 2nd catalytic converter?

Would this mess up anything else?

In my state, you are fine as long as you do not have check engine light if your vehicle is 1996 and up. It's those vehicles 1995 and below that go through treadmill.
If the 02 sensor receives abnormal amount of exhaust gas, you may end up with check engine light.

My question is that for those who do not live in California, can you have non-california catalytic converter?
It seems like only dealers have california spec catalytic converter and it's quiet expensive. If my catalytic converte(s) goes bad, I would like to put on a non california catalytic converter since it's cheaper.

My state doesn't do an emissions test. Although I wouldn't want to drive around with a check engine light on because then I wouldn't know if something else goes wrong.

So would you then just have a muffler shop make up a straight through pipe? What about the post O2 sensor? I think, but am not sure that it screws into the same pipe that the 2nd cat is on.

usually if a vehicle has two cats, inline like the 4runner does, they often aren't two complete cats. usually when one is removed, the other won't be able to do a complete job. In other words, if your going to have some smell. You could replace the pair w/ a single all in one cat, but it probably wouldn't gain much.

Under Federal law, it is illegal to alter the characteristics of the emission control system from the way it was manufactured. Not that the Feds are going to catch you--the only practical concern is the state you live in (which sounds like a non-issue) and the Check Engine Light.

You say you have two cats and a 50-state 4Runner. This leads me to conclude you have a 2001 or 2002 4Runner. So not being in California makes no difference, it's the same spec wherever you go. All 4Runners from those years had 2 cats. Removing the second cat will almost certainly leave you with a CEL and a P0420 code unless you invest in the URD sim. Why do you want to do this?

I don't think this is a widely-held opinion. My own experience with URD, although limited, has been quite satisfactory, and I have seen many more positive things reported than I have negative things, which related mainly to delivery and technical problems with the sim.

Would you care to elaborate further on your information? And why you felt compelled to come on here just to post this diatribe?
