Removal of Chrome windshield trim 1st Gen?

When you did yours, what did you do with these clips?

The clips are merely embedded in the adhesive. No holes.

Here's how I did mine.

More bullets for NO stinking trim to trap moisture, saltwater or dirt:

The safelite estimator put it at about $325 after taxes...... I'm debating on just pulling it myself, cleaning it up, and reinstalling it myself. ....

If doing it yourself, make sure you clean mounting area and surround down to bare metal before you do finish.
Suggest you check IF alright to apply urethane adhesive directly to clean, bare metal with proper primer (not paint primer but one FOR THE ADHESIVE).
Then just prime and paint exposed metal. This way you have less layers to fail between metal and glass.
Remember that that white clip is to hold the glass in place while adhesive is curing so that needs to stay.

Thanks for all the pointers. I'm going to pull the windshield this weekend and see what I have to deal with underneath. I'm still not 100% sure I'm going to reinstall it myself but I still need to get it cleaned up.

I got the windshield off - in one piece - so feel free to accuse me of witchcraft.

Apparently one of the previous owners thought it was a swell idea to drill holes for these clips around the windshield cause this is what I pulled out:

Fortunately none of these stupid holes rusted out so I may have dodged a huge bullet and I should be able to clean it up and fill the holes easily.

I've got it down to bare metal (holy hell that sucked) so just double-checking before I go any further.

Correct. My reasoning is Less layers to fail the better. IT had been almost 2 years, and no issue with mine. In fact I meant to paint over the exposed POR because it is not UV resistant but had been too busy with adventures to work on cosmetics - LOL!

In fact, am wondering if OK to apply adhesive with primer directly on bare metal, then only POR or prime then paint the remaining exposed bare metal. I suggest you check with glass shop or maker of the adhesive (Sika).
IIRC, if wanting to paint over POR best to apply paint primer to tacky POR. Once POR cures to a hard, shiny surface you would need to scuff it before applying primer.

I had safelite tell me new glass is not available for my 87. Did you have difficulty getting your glass?

No problem finding it in 2016 but it may have changed. Safelite also replaced mine.
