Removal of Chrome windshield trim 1st Gen?

my windshield leaks pretty bad at the top (i can see the drops) and I think at the bottom too (have water pooling up where my clutch heel rests, and a corresponding BAD cancerous rust spot). Id like to pull this trim to reseal/ patch the windshield. Thanks for anyones input.

You'll probably need to make a stop at an auto parts store and pick up a trim removal tool. Once you have that, start with the part that you need to remove, pry it up and work your way through.

I recently pulled my windshield and found some issues in there as well. The best thing to do is try and get the trim off with out bending it. If there is any kind of bend it will not go back on right. You will more than likely need to order a bag of clips for the trim as well. All mine crumbled when we took the trim off and the window out. I even had a window guy who is a good friend come and do this for me.

I had to fix rust in 4 spots and get new trim, clips and a windshield. The glass cracked after we had it completely out. The trim was more than the window. I would suggest to clean it up and use POR15 to seal it up so that there are no problems later.

Leaky Windshield

Don't leave it too long and keep an eye on your carpet or you'll end up with this:

My driver's side footwell. There are three layers there, including the body mount, and it was a giant PITA to fix.

thats the spot where im talking about, ill try and get a pic tomorrow. My rust isnt as widespread, but there are a couple deep holes that have got to be nearing all the way through.

Get the windshield out and clean it up like everyone has agreed, but if that doesn't fix the lower (floorboard) leak look at the cowl. When my windshield was out I had them really work the body where it seats. Strip it, clean it, fix some bad spots, etc. They went all out when I had it in for paint. Got it home and IT LEAKED!!! I don't regret the work they did and the new glass, but my rusty floorboard was because of the cowl leak. Before I ever re-installed the cowl cover, I hit the seams in there with seam sealer, no leaks since.

Also, if you're getting a new windshield you might wanna ditch the crappy "rust-enabling" trim and go with a black rubber gasket like I did. Seats up flush so less chance of debris getting behind it and causing further rust. You can see the gasket in the after pic below:

no problem give respect were resect is due. one question did you order your bumper offline or from some were local im looking to get an aftermarket bumper for my 2nd gen and would much rather stick to some were local incase i have any trouble with it plus it would save me alot on shipping. o and btw i say local because i only live like 2.5 to 3 hours from you

i own a glass shop in az and yes get away from the chrome moldings if you want to get rid of rust they are a rust magnet

i would suggest calling around for prices and with the following you could figure out a good deal and yes i would change over to a gasket. i would also recommend when you get this done take out the glass yourself (beat it out with a bat if you have to) that way you can inspect the pinchweld to see if you have rust and then repair it before the new glass goes in hope this helps

My 88 is absolutely rust free, not a spec of rust anywhere. I am guessing because I cant see any rust anywhere on the truck (under carriage, up top etc) that I dont have to worry about this. It has yet to rain literally one drop this year in NM.
Would you agree?

Front bumper ordered from 4xInnovations. Shipping sucked but I couldn't find anyone local.

i have a 90 and the moldings are the same design as 1st gen and no sign of rust from outside but under the molding upper driver's side is rust seems like water just collects under those moldings.if i could switch out to a gasket i would but mine did not come with that option.1st gen did they used the gasket on the work truck edition if you try and order it just for yours you will always get the glue in you have to tell them you want the rubber set from a work truck or tell them your part numbers

When I pulled the chrome trim off you should have seen the buildup of rotted leaves, fine dust, pine needles, etc. It had created something like a mud that was packed in the lower corners and holding moisture. The new gasket seats up so smooth that it would be very unlikely that kind of debris would get in there again. So glad I went that route.

any particular brand of gasket you guys are using? im sure a windshield place would know of one right...

i use precsion replacement parts that's the brand name fits good with a great seal the and the glass go with pilkington or pgw they are the best brands in my opinion job to install should cost no more than a couple of hundred not much labor to put in a rubber set

My '87 needs a new windshield. I, along with most Arizonans, carry full glass coverage so it will be covered.

So, a decent glass company should be able to honor the rubber seal request?
