Removing all the ATF from an '04 V8

I just noticed today that page 02-52 of the hardcopy service manual lists similar refill quantities-

Dry Fill - 11.5 qts.
Drain and Refill - 3.2 qts.

Previously I was incorrectly going by the table on page 40-6.
Where did you get a copy of the hardcopy service manual? I would like to get one. I only have the repair manual.

Oops sorry, what I have is the two-volume repair manual. Publication numbers RM1059U1 and RM1059U2. I was speaking generically when I said service manual.

OK. SO how is your transmission doing now?

Maybe go through the troubleshooting guide for the tranny, it seems like it can be helpful

After finishing the drain / refill last night all I know is that the transmission was maybe a quart low. I haven't had a chance to do an official test drive yet, but once I do I'll report the results.

Just wondering how many miles on your 4runner and how clean did the fluid look that you drained out? Looking forward to knowing if correcting the low fluid level eliminated your problem.

I checked out the TIS site and didn't find a service manual, just the repair manual. Are we talking about the same thing or are there two different manuals?

There was no service manual on the TIS site, that's why I asked.

It was actually one of the tech references. I dont think there even is a service manual, just the repair manual.

The site is a bit confusing with a zillion pdfs but no proper search or index function.

OK... I finally took my 4Runner out for a test drive to see if the ATF level adjustment solved any of my complaints about the transmission. Well, everything seems unchanged so far. Putting it into "D" for the first time today, there was a second or two of slipping, then full engagement. It's really strange. During summer I didn't notice any slipping. As temperatures cooled a bit this fall it seemed to start slipping a lot and then fully engage violently at times. Now that temperatures are even colder the slipping is less dramatic and the transition from slip to full engagement is not as bad.

I've got a cold right now so my hearing isn’t too great, but the muffled metallic noise (like keys jingling) I usually hear in 4th gear is still there I think.

The fluid I drained from the pan looked pretty good, only slightly darker than the new ATF. I guess that's probably typical of a vehicle with only 5000 miles on it.
