usuall squeal will happen beause it is misaligned or loose/tightbelt..
but seems like you said you tried both tightening and loosening, next thing i would look at is if the alternator is even aligned.. try look top down to see if the pulley is straight in line with the other belts and pulleys..
happened out of no where?
might even just be a cheap enough fix to replace the belt.. but if its hot then my guess is its slipping real bad, or misaligned..
also far fetched, but last thing would be that the alt is frozen, but you would know because the car wouldnt be charging the battery at all and you can probably just check that through a multimeter..
but try taking off the belt and spining the pulley with you hand, there should be only a little bit of resistence.

If I'm not mistaken, the thread was on TTORA. Do a google search for "alternator pulley replacement bearings." If it comes up with a TTORA site, that's the one ya want.
I know you can just replace the bearings though. Since the alternator is on top in the motor on these things, shouldn't be too bad. Hardest part I could see would be to hold the pulley while breaking it loose, but that's what a screwdriver or an extension through the pulley is for.

Thanks Doc and awpsome! I will search for that link. It started squeling after me and my bud changed the timing belt and water pump out, after we got it all back together it would squeak just a second then stop but it has gotten a little worse since.Today I tried tightening and loosening it and made it worse although I really can't tighten it up enough because the nut is missing on the bottom of the alternator, do you know what size it is? I sprayed some belt dressing on the belt and it got quit for a second then came back. Pulley spins freely with no resistance so I think the alternator is ok.

I had similar issues. I would get some belt squeal on startup occasionally, and it started to sound like a bearing going bad at idle(sounded from the alternator but it's hard to tell). I bought all three accessory belts and just got done replacing them. I tried to diagnose the problem by first starting the car with no accessory belts to see if it was water pump or an idler gear, then hooked up one accessory belt at a time. After all that I don't have that bearing noise any more! It seemed like the belts were actually making the noise. Hopefully that helps!

I am having the same problems with squealing/chirping belts. I just replaced all the belts with the best the local parts house had. Worked like a charm for about a week and now its back. I noticed there is a slight mis-alignment between my crank pulley and the one right above it. Anyone else have that?
