removing cargo shelf

After some browsing, I have gathered that if you remove the optional cargo shelf from the cargo area of a 4th gen, there is a gap that annoys some. What I can't figure out is where that gap is (even with some of the pictures..). Is it only on the floor, or is it on some vertical surface like the side or the seat backs?

I plan on buying a Weathertech or Husky cargo liner, so if the gap is only on the floor, I don't care since it will be covered by the liner. And I have no use for the shelf, so I'd like to remove it and have as much space as possible back there.

The gap will be in the carpet

You will see the metal floor. I do not remember seeing a vertial gap. There is a vertical area that is part of the shelf, but that part comes out with the shelf. I am not sure if the liners cover or not, but I have removed my shelf before. Good luck.

I simply have the shelf in the lowered position. a Weathertech cargo mat fits almost perfectly then. The outer rear edge has to deal with the minimal height of the shelf (about 1"). I think that if you took it out it would look bad.

By the way, get the Weathertech mat. It is much thicker and more flexible than the Husky liner.

thanks for the advice on weathertech v husky. i am leaning weathertech for sure.

there seem to be two options - leaving the shelf in there and getting the "shelf option" mat which is smaller, or removing the shelf and getting the full size mat. are you saying i should leave the shelf in and use the full size mat? and that the overhang on the rear edge is minimal? why do you think removing the shelf would look bad, if the cargo mat were covering the floor?

Can you tell that anything is missing when the liner is in place? I plan on doing the same thing. I want my cargo liner to sit flat and dont use the double decker thing anyway.
 
I run my rig as a flat bed 24-7. I removed the back seats so when you fold down the back part it sits flush. You gain all the room behind the front seat for storage or mega lumbar. Even at full push back you have plenty of room.


If you remove the shelf it will not be level. So all you gain is the height of the shelf. Is this correct?

Well I removed the shelf a few days ago. Im getting the full size weathertech liner in a few weeks. There is a 4" strip that runs along directly behind the seat thats about 1" taller than the rest of the floor. If you remove this it shows bare metal, but everything is level. It APPEARS that one of the seat brackets will get in the way of the cargo liner though, and still prevent it from sitting level. This I dont understand, as it shouldnt be any different than a 4R without the double decker shelf. Its just barely though and at the very point where the liner would butt against the back of the rear seat.

Either way I think the full size liner will look good. Does anyone know if you can still use the tie down rings with these liners in place? I saw the Husky liner for the 5th gens have cutouts for these, but Ive never seen this on any of the 4th gens?
 
I love that dd shelf. I keep all my survival/recovery gear under it and still have room for groceries up top.

Don't your groceries fall off the top of the DD when you accelerate? I used the bottom a lot for beer cases, but anything on top always found its way off the back ledge. and then falls out of the trunk when I open the hatch.
