Removing double decker cargo

After eight months, I did not use the double decker once. Looks neat at the dealer when shopping, but completely useless in practice.

Anyhow, I needed to reclaim the extra inch or two of vertical clearance so I removed my double decker. Easy enough to do - remove a pair of bolts from the panel between the back seats and the double decker and then you can access the two bolts that hold the double decker in place. The problem now is aesthetic - the panel is clearly designed for 4Runners with the double decker, so now after I put it back, there is a gap in the cargo area. Hopefully these pictures illustrate my point.

Anybody know if one can buy a panel for non-double decker 4Runners and put it in there instead to fix this? Any idea of the part number? I searched on partznet, I couldn't get that particular illustration to load.

I removed mine and then wanted to get the trim piece to replace the other and found out it costs like $250. I'll either live with it like that or wait until I can get it used OR trade someone for the piece and give them my cargo system.

I had the part # from Partznet, I called instead of searching online but don't have it in front of me. If you call them they will figure the # out but again it ain't cheap.

If it's not reasonable @ Partznet, you won't like it anywhere else either - I think Partznet is very $ competetive, and has good service.

I think your best bet is to trade out with another 4Runner owner who doesn't have it. There must be someone willing to do the trade if you so post.

I know we all use our trucks differently, but I like the thing. I use alot of blueprints, & it helps me separate them. Also, when hauling groceries [keep the "grocery getter" comments: we all gotta eat], it's a useful place to put items you don't want crushed, like bread, chips, produce. I know this is a minority position in the forum, but does anybody else have any uses?

The main reason I wanted it out is that I "haul" my dog around everywhere I go and the cargo system has a hard top to it so the dog goes sliding and scratching around whenever I exercise the V8. He has a much better grip being able to anchor into the carpet. If it wasn't for that I would have left it in place.

If that is the case, then you could buy something like the Husky liner with or without the cargo. I am sure that would help.

Double Decker

Yep - Wife & I take our two pups riding often, however, it's one back seat each for them. If I tried to put them in the cargo hole, the whinning & wimping would be so loud I couldn't hear the JBL.
The puppies wouldn't like it either.

i removed mine, and found the same problem...i though of either buying the husky liner (or a carpeted cargo liner), to cover it up, but after seeing it really doesnt make that much difference without it, i decided to leave it in. im sure it will be usefull someday. i have 2 dobermans, and a liner is a must back there. i dont want dirt and crap in my carpets, so either buy a husky liner or one of the carpeted ones to save your cargo area. i just bought a husky liner, and put it over top of the cargo deck...the dogs love it since they have a sure footing now, and i still have the cargo shelf in the remote case i need it.

Here is the part number from the back side of the corresponding piece of my non-double decker interior. I just happen to have it all disassembled.

I have the DD cargo system and I leave it down most of the time and throw a blanket or two over it so my dog (Greyhound) can be comfortable while he is back there and doesnt slip and side if he stands up. It is nice to have the option to flip it up when I go grocery shopping.

i don't mind the deck, although i don't use it much. just do what i do with my cargo and tie down the dogs with the cargo net . just kidding, i'm a dog lover and i'm sure the husky mats are great.

I leave my double decker down while driving around home with the Husky liner over it. When travelling, I find it easier to pack with the double decker up. Suitcases are held in place nicely by the cargo net and odds and ends fit under the shelf. The Husky is a little long with the double decker up, but you can fold the back end up and slide it in so that the liner fits correctly around and behind the wheel wells.

I think the double deck looks good but it serves no purpose. I tried using the shelf numerous times when I had a lot of packages in my trunk, but whenever I made a turn, CLUNK. Everything fell off of the shelf and went all over the place. Then when we took my dad to the airport, I just had to put it down because it would not hold the weight of two suitcases and a laptop case and these items would not fit under the shelf!

I get major use out of the cargo system. My wife and I's standard size carry-on suitcases fit nice and snug under the double decker system. They're out of sight and and no sliding around. I use an extreme cargo mat under the cargo system for normal driving and lay it over the top when hauling bigger items.

Rando - thanks for the part number. I was actually at the dealer this morning for 135k service on my wife's Camry so I did get the part number from them. I'm glad that they matched!

Looks like the part is $145 plus shipping from Partznet (versus $190.59 from my dealer).

I'm glad many of you are finding good use for the double deck. I thought my wife and I would have used it by now, but almost all of our traveling is to races with bikes, big suitcases, and coolers. Hopefully, some folks without the double deck are reading this thread and are interested in purchasing a pristine complete grey deck from me at a bargain price!

No problem. Here is a picture of the backside of the part in question (ignore the other parts) in case anyone wants to attempt to 'mod' their double-decker piece of match. BTW, I'm not sure this piece is the only difference between the two cargo systems.

Great thread. I want to ditch mine so that I can mount my amplifiers back there (the JBL SUCKS!!!). When I am done the floor will be slightly taller than stock and I will put carpet in. I have a Husky Liner and my dog (Lab/Rot) slides all over on it! It is WAY more slick than the carpet back there. My solution is I have a large moving mat just for her. When ever she travels in the truck the moving mat is folded out for her. Usually the seats get flipped down and she rides right behind us, we like to have her close.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks the Husky Liners are slick -- that's the same experience I had with them in the F150. When I called the manufacturer, they thought I was being stupid.
