Removing double decker cargo

Chris,

I have been searching like crazy for my 03 4runner sport for the past few weeks. I expect to have one within a few weeks. Obviously I don't know if I am gonna find one without it.

I don't think I really need a double decker but would be happy to trade if everything matches up.

I'm in Hoboken if you can wait a week or two we could try to figure something out.

I say enough great things about Barbara King at TRDparts4u.com - I just placed another order with them on Friday and the speed of their responsiveness is amazing. And I've found their prices to be consistently better than partznet.

I still have the pristine grey double decker sitting in my garage in case someone wants it.

My main reason for removing it is to clean it. I do agree that it's pretty much useless though.

Is it hard to remove the section behind it where the loops are?

IMHO, it comes handy when i have a lotta stuff (i.e. groceries, or luggages and bags from a long trip). It separates the heavy stuff from the light ones. I use the spider net on top of the shelf to hold stuff. I also use the cargo net so things will not fall off when you open the hatch.

The spider net Mike is talking about hooks on the rings behind the second row and there are hooks under the shelf along the edge on the top of the DD.

The envelope style cargo net hooks on the D-rings on the floor behind the wheel well housings and at the top around the "knob" that's near where the tonneau cover latches into on the D-pillar. Assuming you're using the Toyota accessory cargo net for the 4Runner.

Any chance anyone out there has a grey double decker setup they don't have any use for? crmartin9, any chance you're still holding on to yours after 5 years? ;-)

I also want to get rid of the double-decker system. Have an aftermarket sub back there and it makes it impossible to even use it. I suppose I could get a custom box made or something, but for now I'm gonna take it out and see what this gap is all about.

I ended up getting the trim piece from a wrecked non DD 4Runner. I actually got the carpet too, but the carpet was not a good fit. There’s differences in the floor of the vehicle that require modification to the carpet padding to fit ok. I ended up using my regular carpet. There’s a small gap between the carpet and the trim piece that I ended up using a strip of matching carpet to mask. But with a cargo liner it doesn’t matter anyway.

In my post above I mentioned the floor being different between DD and non DD 4runners. You can delete it no problem, but my bet is you can’t add it if you don’t have it. The non-DD 4runner I pulled the trim and carpet from, the actual body is missing the metal mounts for the plastic clips that lock the DD to the floor. That’s why’s the non DD carpet didn’t fit my DD 4Runner. I had to cut out carpet padding to make room for those metal mounts. But it still looked lumpy to me. I didn’t verify this, but I’m willing to bet that if it’s missing those mounts, the body is also missing the holes where the shelf bolts into the ground as well.

And for those interested, here is the carpet strip I used to cover the gap. I used the same carpet i used to make the cargo box in the left side of the pic.

double decker depth

Anyone know how deep (tall) the lip that is left behind when you removed the double decker cargo deck in a 4th gen is? I'm planning a build to remove it and replace with an extruded aluminium rail system. I want the Al rail to be the same vertical height as the removed deck. This way when I put the VERY shallow drawers/slides in it, the will be flat to the back seats when folded down.

Should I just leave the DD in and keep it down to be as flat as possible?

I have the DD and leave it down and use a 4" pad when i car camp.

Yeh, I've just left my DD down for the past who knows how long. I've used it like a handful of times in the up position.

I sleep in my car regularly with the DD down, a pad and it's comfy as heck.

I recently removed the DD to put in a new floor (same level as the DD in the down position) and a slide out shelf.
