I am also curious on how this is done, I'd like to change my handles to chrome if possible, what is it that you're trying to do?
What color is your 4Runner?

Mine is Natural White, or that's what they call it. It bright as light though I like it. Just got it yesterday.

MaliciousClout, I finally got around to ordering my color-keyed parts and am gettin ready to remove my chrome accessories in the next week or two. Are you interested in purchasing my chrome parts? Here's information on replacing the door handles on a 2005+ Tacoma...I'm sure it's the same for the 4Runner.

Replaced the grille, garnish and door handles today. Took a total of about 3 hours.
The thread K.C. posted on removing door handles for the Tacoma was extremely helpful. The only deviation for the 4Runner is removing the rear door handles. When you reach step 11, follow these directions instead:
11a) Reach into the door, pull the latch mechanism toward the inside of the door.
11b) There is a small hole that is covered by a circular piece of white/clear tape. Reach inside the door and punch the piece of tape out with your finger. This allows access to the Torx fastener that retains that back door handle "cap".

Bolts221, do you still have the stainless door handles and other garnish trim pieces ? I'm interested in replacing the colored items on my 4runner with the stainless parts from a sport edition also interested in swapping for a sport edition hood , mine is nautical blue metallic 2004 Limited

So my exterior rear door handle fell off the other day in my hand....... Didn't know I was such a beast 
Anywho, seems like a simple fix, I believe the bolt for the 'cap' was rattled loose. I removed the door panel and punctured the round white sticker that covers the hole which is in line with said bolt. Problem. The lock assay and actuator is blocking access to the bolt that I am after. What now?!

Did you ever get a video or figure out how to remove these handles ? The front seems like you can do it without removing the panel but what about the rear handles ?

Door Handle Removal
I removed all 4 door handles on my 2003 Gen 4 today. I wanted to paint them with black epoxy paint. I was not able to get the toyotanation link to work. The front door handles have already been covered.
To remove the rear door handles, you only need a Phillips head, a flat head screw driver and a T20 Torx bit. It only took me 5 minutes each door. Remove the arm rest by pulling up on it. Use the flat head to pry out on the cover where the interior door handle is. I pried by inserting the screw driver between the handle arm and the cover and it popped out without breaking. Remove the 2 Phillips head screws you have exposed and pull out on the front lower part of the door skin. Pop it off and lift up to remove it from the door. I unplugged the light and let it hang by the latch cables. Remove the plug to the door latch/lock actuator. Remove the 3 screws holding the door catch at the top back of the door. Remove the small piece of white tape on the inside of the door and slide the catch assembly down and inch or 2 to expose the T20 screw that holds the stationary door handle on. The screw should stay in place. I left mine so it would not drop into the door. Use the flat head screw driver between the stationary piece and the outer door handle. Pry toward the back of the truck and it should pop out. Pull slightly out on the door handle and it will slide out toward the rear of the truck. It really only takes 5 minutes.
