Removing Rear Sliding Tray and Converting Rear

I've seen a number of posts for people wanting to ADD the sliding tray and the parts list of things to buy to do it. And a few posts of people swapping the sliding tray parts with someone else's non-slide parts. Then there is the old thread explaining how to remove the tray and what was under it - but the owner was just curious and they put the tray back in. But nowhere could I find a parts list if someone just wanted to buy the parts to swap out the tray for the standard cargo area configuration.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THIS? Our 2011 4Runner Trail didn't have an option to NOT have the slide. It seemed useful at the time but it has it's own issues (stuff falls behind, you lose about 4" of cargo height clearance, and the slide only extends like 60% of the way out). I have a 2nd Gen Taco with a Truckvault drawer system in it and really enjoy the utility (and security) of the drawers. I wanted the same utility in the back of the wife's 4Runner as we plan to add a RTT and use it for summer camping with the family.

I've decided to remove my tray for installation of a BOSS Strongbox 4Runner drawer system. I really like the platform above that I can mount my AluCab fridge slide to. Alas - the BOSS drawer is NOT compatible with 4Runners that have the sliding tray... So it's gotta go.

Rather than find someone with the standard cargo configuration to swap parts with, I decided to just buy the required parts so that I can swap back to the factory slide if I ever sell my 4Runner - especially if I upgrade to a new 4Runner and want to move the box over to the new rig.

If anyone is looking to do the same here are the Toyota OEM parts that you need to convert the cargo area to the standard cargo configuraiton:

(2) 58249-60020; BRACKET, CENTER FLOOR BOARD SUPPORT $20.37 ea.
* You can reuse the two bolts per bracket from the brackets you are swapping. They are the same part numbers.
(2) 64721-60010-C0; COVER, LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT $37.21 ea. (these are the cargo D rings)
(1) 58401-35061-C3; BOARD SUB-ASSY, RR FRONT $232.24 (this replaces the storage cubby with the sloped floor behind the rear seat)
(1) 58579-35021; PAD, RR FLOOR $248.22
(1) 58570-35150-C5; CARPET ASSY, RR FLOOR $482.42

Notes:
1) I found all of the parts online from another Toyota dealer for much less than MSRP (even with the $100 S&H). My local dealer wanted full MSRP + sales tax. :gun6:

2) The carpet alone nearly doubles the cost and for some reason, Toyota considers it freight so it adds ANOTHER $200+ in shipping. (You can't just roll it up and shove it in a box? :shrug: ) Since I am covering all of the rear carpet with a Strongbox, I found a roll of automotive carpet on Amazon for $37.48 & free shipping. Reviews were good and one person mentioned using it in their 4Runner for a sleeping platform and it was a near-perfect match to the factory carpet. I will cut to size with enough to tuck under the trim pieces.

Total cost including aftermarket carpet: $538.02

Nice work! The strongbox looks like a great solution.

I too found myself really never using the sliding tray. One of the best things about it imo was the flat platform from front to back for longer cargo items or sleeping.

I ended up removing it and going with the goose gear plate instead of converting to a standard cargo area. This winter I will be making multiple platforms/drawer systems that easily bolt to it.

I used some particle board to fill the low areas, then a nice 1/2" hard plywood, with aluminum L track and a soft rubber/foam mat material on top of the plywood. I think my cost all in was like $250, most of that being the L track.

I hated the damn tray. The sliders wore out quickly and would rattle around on bumpy roads.

I'm very happy with my sliding tray. Gives me a perfectly flat floor for sleeping. Building a platform would take away valuable headroom. I've actually used the sliding portion numerous time and found it pretty useful. Now a Strongbox with extending platform for sleeping would be pretty nice.

Thank you for posting this! Oh so helpful. There are so many threads about how to remove the sliding tray, but none actually talked about how to convert it back to OEM with the part numbers that you need. Thank you very much. I see how the tray can be useful, however in my situation I would prefer without it.

I just ordered all the part numbers you listed. Just in case anybody is curious, I ended up finding all those parts used on ebay and it came out just a bit under $600.00 total shipped. Not cheap, but definitely reasonable enough compared to sourcing all of them new. There was only 1 listing for the carpet and pad at the time, but I'm sure more will popup if anybody else is looking.

If anybody is in Northern California and wants a tray, I would be willing to sell mine. PM me if so.
