Removing Running Boards

anyone that has removed their running boards have any problems with rock chips or anything? or any other negatives to this?

Nope. If you keep the mud flaps they will catch most everything.

I would love to remove mine, but they prevent a lot of snow and road salt from getting up into the lower body that I just cant seem to do it. I also use them once in awhile to stand on for tying down on the roof rack.

Just gave my truck a good hand wash, it's first since I bought it 2 weeks ago. I was instantly reminded of how much these things hold water (and sand, and salt, and mud) upon the body. Going to pull them off this weekend.

Not as much as you would think, the factory mudflaps do a decent job of keeping spray down and really all the running boards protect (if anything) is the bottom edge of the doors, the underside of the body is still exposed.

Might be different in your area, but around here, Lowes has a pretty good selection of metric hardware. Also, most major auto parts chains should have enough to get the job done for no more than $4-6.


If that doesn't work, 3/8" bolts should be a workable sub for 10mm (shank diameter), or probably 1/4" would work in place of bolts with a 10mm head width. If you're having to install the nuts as well, then matching the factory hardware isn't as important than if you're screwing into built-in threads.

I'd remove mine if I was a little taller but they make getting in and out easier. I wouldn't worry too much about getting rock chips because the mud flaps should catch whatever flies up.

my 13 yr old daughter removed the running boards from a project 4th gen. mostly a street truck, but the boards are for sale. the OEM look lame to me. tight rock sliders are a different thing.
