Removing the 1st cat on 3.0

Im putting things together on my 89 3.0 and was wondering if anyone has removed the 1st cat out from behind the motor. Thinking about running some headers and eliminating that cat. I still need to smog it in Cal. Is there any set up that anyone has done? Do I need both cats? Can I add another one down the line? I am redoing the whole exhaust system from front to back so open for anything. Thanks!

i have a 3.0 2nd gen....i took off the one clostest to the muffler...is there a nother one??? and i still pass maryland emissions
 
ya i only knew about the one near the muffler. i wanna do a high flow for that but if theres another on the cross over then id like to just remove that whole setup.

i have a flowmaster and imma do headers take off the other cat and use the flowmaster....i hope it goes good lol
 
yea i wish lol im a CA resident for the time being. i gotta have the cat on there. im in the military and ill be transfering somewhere else stateside in the next few months so im prolly gonna chnge that lol i miss my old straight pipe setup...
 
oh sorry lol that was on a diff truck. it was a 61 so no smog required. but ill know in the next few months how this sounds.. tho i did run it for a few mins with the exhaust un-hooked. sounds awesome. cant even talk to someone standing too close.
 
Thanks for the intrest guys. I have read that getting that cat out from behind the motor lessens the chance of another blown head gasket. This is kind of a slow process for me now the runner is 30 miles from my house and my buddy and i work opposite schedules. I will keep ya all posted on my findings.
I should be able to pick up all the parts this weekend and finish putting the puzzle back together.
 
That is what I'm wondering myself. I'm thinking I could add another one down the line or mod that one. Maybe tuck it away somewhere? Seems to me the less heat around that motor the better. I have to make a run up to dave'z off road up in placerville for some parts so I think I'm going to ask him what he thinks. I welcome any other thoughts!!! Thanks
 
Ok. I am going to skip the headers for now just to get this thing on the road. If I stick with stock mans and fab a connecting pipe in place of that first cat think it will ca smog? ( New pipe, new 2nd cat, new muffler ) I really want to get that thing out of the engine compartment but I want it to be legal.
Or is this a " pipe dream "? Thanks!!
 
Sorry folks the " 1st cat " that I have been refering to is just the cross over pipe!!! Please bear with me!!
Lets start this over! Looking for advice on redoing the exaust from the manifolds to the muffler. Should I go bigger maybe 2 1/2 or 3 inch?

haha yea i just kinda ran with it cuz i wasnt sure as im new to t4rs.. i dont know if ur truck is lifted or even how much room is under a stock height runner but that link i posted is the route im going.. tho i have a 4" lift so i know ill clear with pipes around everything..

I don't see why it wouldn't pass smog, there isn't a o2 sensor in it. So you should be good, should make it sound meaner to.
 
Thanks everyone for the help. I just got the Toyota FSM for the runner. This thing helps out way more than a Chilton or Haynes does. Heads coming back today along with intake, intake man, valve covers and other parts that i had hotsy washed.
