removing top for first time

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. But how many of your topless runners leak after you put the top back on? I wanna pop the top on mine, but I like to use it in the snow/rain/mud.

I used to put mine back on with 7 bolts. 2 in the out side of the top, 2 in the front corner, 1 in the sensor, and 2 in the back. Even through winters it never leaked.

Never has leaked. I've taken mine off 4-5 times since I've owned it. Course, I apply petroleum jelly to the weatherstripping before I put it back on. Helps give it a better seal.
Probably not going to switch to the soft top this year, but maybe next year. It's hard for me cause I don't have a place to store the hard top at the moment. :noidea:

I have taken mine off at least three dozen times between a few summers.

Why would it leak? It is pretty hard for these things to leak. I am never all that careful either, I pop it off and put it in the dirt, and when I put it back on I don't clean anything.

It is a must to remove the top - it is what makes this thing unique. When that top is off it will turn a lot of heads and make for a few good conversations.

Get over the fear! It is made to be taken off! hahaha

Just put all your interior trim (if you still have it) and screws aside for the warmer months, and remove all the bolts, unplug the wiring harness in the rear and tuck it into the trim, and have a buddy take it off with you.

It is a ton of fun in the summer!

My trim and interior is/are in excellent condition. My dad was a Toyota tech for 20 years and bought (what is now my 4runner) new. He always told me to never remove the top. Like it was Gizmo the mogwai. He said they don't seal right. May have to break some rules :guitar3:

Mine is 30 years old and in the couple of summers I have owned it I have taken the top off over and over. Sometimes a couple of times a week because of the rain. It has never leaked because of the top.

Now, the sunroof, that's a different story!

I owned an 87!for about 8 years. I took the hard top off every spring and put it back on every fall with no issues. I followed the directions in OM and 0 leaks, 0 fitting issues, and no problems. If my recollection serves me correctly all go,to were the same, but it was recommended to install the 2 bolts going into the door pillars first to help line the holes for the rest of the bolts. I am/was not aware of a go,t that triggered the rear windows operation. However, there was a plug that needed to be put together for the rear window and wiper to work.

I had a custom soft top made for the afternoon downpours. Go for it, but follow OM instructions for years of "topless" fun! (That's what "she" said!) :reddance:
