This thread is for anyone is interested in upgrading their factory rear view mirror with a unit that has some combination of compass, temperature, self-dimming, frameless & HomeLink.
A few notes. In 2013 Gentex acquired HomeLink from Johnson Controls. Gentex is not licensing HomeLink to rear view mirror manufactures. Also the new rear view mirrors rarely have temperature. New models of Gentex mirrors have HomeLink 5 which uses two-way communication. An example of the two-way communication is your SUV and garage door operator with HomeLink 5 provides notification that the garage door closed. None of the mirrors I list use HomeLink 5.
Given: 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner rear view mirror is:
9” x 2.625” x 1.5” top mounted to roof.
Distance between your 4Runner visors depends on the angle you have the rear view mirror. Also if you have the 2001/2002 visors with slide outs (plus HomeLink and lighted mirrors) your visors are slightly wider.
Product dimensions are long x high x deep. I wanted real rear view mirror sizes so I email and called the companies directly (only Rostra return my emails/calls). Bob of Bob's Automotive Mirrors and More who gave me the background information and helped with some dimensions. Also people who bought the mirrors on Amazon were a big help. Most dimensions came from two sources.
Sone possible choices are listed below. I would stick to a width of 9.5” to 10.25” and understand a height greater than 2.5" affects your forward view.
