replace stock head unit with double din–Wiring question

I am trying to replace my stock head unit in a 2005 SR5 with a double din pioneer unit. My stock head unit is just the Toyota base radio, i don't think it's a JBL one, it doesn't say JBL anywhere. My head unit looks like this:

This is the unit I plan to replace it with: Pioneer AVH-P2400BT

The first problem I am running into is which wiring harness do I need.

When I went to Crutchfield, it (chat with customer service) tells me I need one that "retains the stock amplifier". It cost about $59.

Do I need one that "retains the factory amplifier" or can I just get one like this?

I am not well educated on stereo systems, amplifiers etc so I don't really know why one option would be better than the other.

If it helps, at some point I would like to replace my speakers for something a bit better than the stock options.

My next question will concern the trim kit needed.

The metra one is the one I used on my 03 stock replacement. I did not have an amp, or the jbl system and had no issues with the harness. Hope this helps.
 
Providing you don't have JBL and the stock amp (don't think you do)

If you have the steering wheel controls, you'll need this.

On the crutchfield site, it says the radio you want is discontinued, so I used another double din pioneer radio.

Also, does your stock radio have 2 antenna plugs? I have an 06 sr5 and mine did. So you would need the Y adapter plus a plug adapter for the smaller radio wire.

Well, I don't have the radio out of the dash, so I don't know if I have 2 antennas.

I assume I don't.

I do not have steering wheel controls.

In terms of JBL or an amp, all I know is the head unit I have is the one in the photo I provided. I assume it is not a JBL and it sounds like I thus do not have an amp.

So for the harness, it sounds like I can use this one that theglove provided?

Sisente used this one and did not have the JBL or amp but it still worked.

So, then which of those 2 should I get?

In terms of the trim, there is one problem I may run into. My friend is giving me the Pioneer unit but he told me he does not have the "trim" piece it came with. I don't know what that trim piece does or if I will need it after I get something like this: Metra 95-8202 Dash Kit Fits select 2000-up Lexus, Scion, and Toyota vehicles ? double-DIN radios at Crutchfield.com

In terms of what the unit will look like once installed and which trim piece I should get, I found 2 photos of that head unit installed. Both look to have different trim pieces. Maybe I am restricted by the bracket that comes stock with my radio? So maybe I only have 1 options in terms of trim piece, this one that theglove posted?

Skip the antenna Y adapter. It will only cause problems. The stock unit determines which antenna has the strongest signal and uses that one, not both at the same time, which would cause multi-path interference.

I think I am going with these 2 parts.

Metra 70-1761 and the Metra 95-8202 Dash Kit.

I hope not having the "trim" piece that came with the Pioneer head unit does not cause the install to have gaps and an unfinished look. I am not really sure what it's purpose was.

You should be fine without the trim piece for the radio. Mine came with one and I didn't use it.
If you want radio reception though, you will need an adapter. You may not need the Y adapter (if you only have one antenna), but you will need one. The stock antenna won't work in the new radio.

Any thoughts on how I go about finding the right adapter?

I can do a search on the forums and see if I can figure out what others have done.

I can order that and hope Juppers is correct that I don't need the Y adapter.

Please keep this updated with pics of the install if you don't mind. I am going to replacing my stock head unit very soon and this is full of great info.

I really only use bluetooth now with Spotify on my phone, but the USB/AUX/CD are nice to have also. USB is really cool because it reads the folders on my iPod when plugged in.

I also bought the Metra Axxess ASWC Steering Wheel interface control for another $50 so I could keep the steering wheel volume and track controls.
I've had no problems with the setup. Bluetooth works excellent, and it comes with the microphone. I'll take some pics this afternoon hopefully. Also, the head unit color scheme can be completely customized, so you can match the color to whatever you like really.

Update

If you have the head unit I posted a picture of, you will need the antennae adapter and the Y adapter. My head unit had the double antennae cables. I have not experienced any interference as mentioned by another member. If it does occur I will update the thread.

The wiring harness and trim also worked.

I ran into one problem and that was the bolts that came with the original head unit were a little big for the holes in the Panasonic unit. The holes in the Panasonic unit do have a slit that allows them to expand, but it was a little tight. This is for mounting the bracket on the sides.

Can you tell me if both your AM and FM function. I wasn't aware of the Y cable when I replaced mine. And AM does not auto sync, I need to manually tune and it is weak. Did you also need this http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-Mda-B...sr=8-2&keywords=4runner+radio+antenna+adapter
 
I checked my radio and the AM station does work.

I cant tell if the signal is weak or if some stations just come in better than others.

Some do give more static than others.

FWIW, I asked Crutchfield during my recent install and they said to let the smaller antenna plug hang and just use the larger one. Did that and have had no issues.
 
I am shopping for a new HU as well,
and I am finding ones that say they are OEM replacements,
and are "plug and play".
Is there really such a thing?
I'd like to install it myself, but every time I read a post about it,
someone mentions some other item they needed to buy.
IS THERE a OEM head unit that does not need a different harness, an adapter and Y cable for the antennae, and will actually fit in the dash properly?

This is the only one that's true "plug n play". I think I saw someone on this forum that has one and likes it.
