Replaced JBL Sub/Added Amp: Install Pics/Info

Getting more anxious every day and ebay hasn't been much help. The JL stealthbox is different than what you posted (slightly different exterior, no big deal).

I wanted the Stealthbox, just too much money for what I'm looking for. I got less money in my whole setup than the Steathbox retails for. If I ever want more, I'm going to build a cargobox like J.A.'s, but seal off a section to mount a sub in. I think it'll still be stealth and also add a little storage.

Thanks for the write up, ARK_SWAMP_RIDER! I did the install this past week. Much more punch than expected!

Do you have a ton of rattles? When I hold the box away from the mounts, it sounds awesome. Once I tighten the bolts it's buzz city. Dynamat on the panels behind the box didn't help. Going to try some grommets to isolate the box from the vehicle chassis. Hopefully that works. Any other ideas?

The JL Stealthbox is pretty sweet. JL site has 10% off the boxes for the month of April if anyone is interested.

Glad it helped you out! As for rattles, there are none that I can hear from the drivers seat. If you're back by the sub maybe, I've not tried listening there. I was expecting some, but was shocked to find there wasn't.

Had a question about hooking up another amp.

What wire did you tap into, for the remote turn on?
I'm not sure what wire turns on the factory amp.

I wasn't able to determine for sure which wire in the harness was the power, so I tapped into the rear 12V socket for my turn on. As long as you never modify the socket to always stay on, this hookup works perfectly fine. There's two wires hooked to the socket, a hot and ground. Right now I can't remember which is which, but that shouldn't be hard to find in a wiring diagram or with a test light (which is what I used).

Hopefully I can get this all done today, I'm going about it a little differently. I removed the factory sub and box all together. Going to instead have a shallow mount 10, running off an old Fosgate amp I had. Going to fiberglass the box today.

Does anyone have any info on the air space(cu ft) is available in the stock enclosure? Whats the depth measurements for clearance of the magnet? I was finally about to find a stock enclosure and currently looking to replace the stock 8 with 10 inch woofer. Thanks in advance

I couldn't get an exact measurement, but I believe with some modification to the box (which I had to do with my sub, very easy) the mounting depth is barely over 3". As far as airspace, I believe it's around .8 cu in. I thought about going with a 10, but I just don't think you can get that to fit in the stock enclosure.

Rockwall: if you've already got the 10 and plan on keeping it, I wouldn't add the 8. I'm super happy with a single 8, but others may not be. If you're current setup leaves something to be desired, then you may consider it. This is a personal choice, and IMO a single sub is sufficient (but then again, my single 8 will surprise you).

I just got done putting a 10 back there, it took a lot of trial and error in fiberglassing a new box. A big pain in the butt trying to get enough room so the factory amp would still fit back there too. But I finally got it done, and it sounds pretty good. I can't believe how crappy that factory 8 is, and how much we had to pay for it too..

Ark, you really should go back and read your initial thread on this project. ;-)

The enclosure is .6 ft^3...17l if you want to get technical. The available depth is generally reported at 4"-4.25" and there's probably room between the box and factory grill for a spacer ring if needed. The only way it was 3" is if the ribbing you removed was over 1" tall since you installed a driver with 4" of mounting depth.

As for driver options. A lot of people will run because of the 8 ohm impedance, but I think the Trio8 should be on the short list for using the factory enclosure. Only 3 7/8" deep with 14mm of honest XBL^2 Xmax, designed by or with assistance from Dan Wiggins of Adire fame. It models with a nice Q=.687 in .6 ft^3 sealed and only needs 200 watts to use all of its rated excursion....figure that's at least a typical 300 watt into 4 ohm amp.

Hmm, thanks for pointing that out riverwolf. I looked back and scanned, but didn't see the volume listed (just overlooked it), and the 3 was a typo, meant 4. I did remove the ribbing you're talking about, it was maybe 3/4" if I remember correctly.

The problem is that I don't think there is room to widen the cutout another two inches to fit that ten. If you'll look at these pics, you can see the 8" sub barely fits in there, I don't see room (on the left/right sides) to widen it enough to put a larger sub there. You can build a custom box to go there, I just don't see it happening with the stock enclosure (would love to be proved wrong on this one though).

Ark-I am looking to do this modification to my 2004 4Runner. I also have the 10 speaker JBL system. A few questions if you do not mind...
Did you consider the Pioneer 8" speaker for this install?
What made you choose the JL?
I am confused on the wiring from the stock sub to the amp. My understanding is that with a DVC sub there are 2 channels and 4 wires going into the sub. Can you tell me how these 4 wires are connected to the amp?
In order to get the JL Audio sub into the stock enclosure I see that you had to grind away the ribbing of the box. Is this the only thing you had to modify to make the LJ Audio sub fit?
Are you happy with the results?
I appreciate any info you can give me while I plan this stereo upgrade.

I'll be glad to answer anything I can on it.
1. Yes, I considered the Pioneer, but I had better/more reviews on the JL sub so I went that route. JL had a rep for great quality products, so I chose that route. Nothing against the Pioneer though.
2. You run an aftermarket amp, and it depends on the configuration/specs on the amp as to how it is wired. Determine what configuration the sub is (dual/single voice coil and the ohm rating) and the amp (mono, two channels, 4 channels, etc). Take that info, and use this page to show how to wire it. This method is what I used (mono amp, 4 ohm SVC sub). If you have questions, let me know your amp/sub configuration and I can offer more input if needed.
3. The only mod I had to do to the box was remove the ribbing, very easy to do. On second thought, I did add a terminal for easy hookup. All this did was allow me to attach wires to the box and have a tight seal.
4. Extremely happy with results, I've had no issues with it at all. I've had 4-5 different sub setups and this is by far the best I've had.
