Replacement Keyless Fob?

New member
Just picked up a 2010 Limited for my wife and it only came with one key. Local dealer quoted me about $230 for the fob and another $260 for the programming. I was wondering what others have done and if it worked for them. Hoping I can go to a local locksmith and get the programming done cheaper. This is the cheapest replacement fob I’ve found but doesn’t include the key insert itself.

I did the following.
1. Bought two new keys off of eBay for my 2011 for $35.95 shipped
2. Took all to the dealership and they cut and programmed both for $150

Up front the dealer wouldn't guarantee the programming would work, but it did.

I have to do this too. My master set was stolen with my wallet. There doesn't seem to be an example of anyone being able to program these keys without the dealer for the 5th gen. Going to have to just pay up!
 
I just got a 14 limited on Friday and it only came with 1 key as well. The salesman, of course, didn't disclose that to me until after the papers were signed, and I was transferring stuff from my old 4runner to this one. Needless to say, they drove 100 miles yesterday to pick up my 4runner and drop off a loaner and they're cutting a new key today for a spare.
 
I bought t wo replacements off of ebay and took to my local locksmith. He cut and programmed both for $75. Couldn't have been easier and way cheaper than the dealership
 
I would shop around at other dealerships. I got a spare fob for my limited for about $230 with programming included.
 
On my 08 Wrangler there was a process that you could program your own keys, but only if you still had at least one of the original keys. It was like playing Nintendo back in the day. Up-down-up-down-left-right-left-right-A-B-Start. I had to turn the new key 'x' times, then do something else, then put in the new key and turn in 'y' times.

There isn't a similar process for the 4Runner?

As anyone seen what a tech or locksmith actually does when 'programming'?

+1 on shopping around. I've also found that a good service department will work with you if you take the time to ask ... nicely. Even more so if you are bringing the 4Runner in for something else.

Something like ... I need an oil change or brakes or alignment. If I get the work done with you, what can we do on a key?
 
Step 1: Buy techstream cable/software off Ebay
Step 2: Buy unlocked smart key from Ebay
Step 3: Program new smartkey with techstream software.
Step 4: Enjoy your new smartkey for Roughly $100.

Can confirm, I did all the above.

How do you program it with the techstream? I have the cable and software, but I didn't see anything to program a new key.

To confirm you are talking about the keyless FOB that Limiteds use with push start? Not the chipped key SR5/Trails use.
 
Yes, the smartkey that I stated is the keyless fob for the push start system . I have a 2011 Limited. But it does appear other posts here are talking about the regular key.

I had never used techstream before this, so I did have to dig around the menus a bit to find the right spot, but when I found it I was able to get the key activated in 30 seconds.

I think this is the key I bought, but you'll have to verify you get the right FCC ID number (HYQ14ACX in my case) off your FOB.

Also, I didn't have to get the key cut as my old FOB simply stopped working (even with new batteries), so I still had my old key to use in the new FOB.

Ok thanks, just to be clear the process outlined above will not work with chipped keys (SR5/Trail/TRD Pro).
 
Followed the advice above and grabbed the key off eBay and was able to get it programmed in less than 5 minutes using Toyota software and a cable. Thanks everyone!
 
Just got a smart key off Ebay and programmed in 5 min. The price was only $80, way less than dealership.
 
To be clear, you can program the Key Fob / Smart Key by yourself with Techstream (watch the YouTube movies above) in 5 min or less.
The procedure is a little bit different, but the result is the same.
You don't need to pay the dealer or a locksmith for the programming, buy the Techstream tool from Ebay or Amazon and you will save money.
