Replacement trailer hitch?

Yes, I searched. Couldn't find an answer.

So my new-to-me '07 doesn't have the factory 2" receiver on the frame. The cutout on the rear bumper isn't even punched out.

Oddly enough, it does have the factory 7 pin (round) connecter under the frame.

Called the Toyota dealer, they want $355 + for the "tow package."

Well, I'm not paying that. The "tow package" includes the wiring and apparently my vehicle already has the wiring (I haven't tested it yet but I'll buy a tester tonight to check it out.)

All the aftermarket hitches I see are the large ones that attach to the side of the frame rails. I don't need that, I just need the factory hitch that (apparently) bolts to the back of the frame crossmember behind the spare tire.

So what's a good source? I'm kind of under the gun here because the wife and I are taking a trip on July 11th and we are planning on pulling our little teardrop trailer. From what I've seen, installation should be a matter of just bolting the thing in. So my only dilemma is where to get one. I'd like to buy a new one but if I can't find a new one, I guess a Toyota salvage yard would be the place to go? I think there are a couple in the Denver area though any recommendations would be much appreciated. :thumb3:

they cant be very expensive, why not just use a standard hitch?

you'll never have a need for an actual frame mounted hitch?

Might try one of the pull a parts, LKQ etc to see if you can find it cheaper.

If your 4Runner didn't come with a factor hitch then it doesn't have the hole in the bumper to accommodate the factory hitch. At least my previous 4Runner didn't. If you go factory then you'll need a new rear bumper as well.

I just pulled my OEM hitch harness off my 2007 over the weekend so I could install my new CBI bumper. I plan on selling the hitch harness assembly for $70 plus shipping. Let me know if you're interested.

Please keep in mind that the install is more complicated than just bolting it to the crossmember. 2 of the bolts are on top of the crossmember (sort of) and getting access to them is tough with the bumper cover on.

If you don't like the look of the weight dist hitch, you can always buy one cheap at U Haul and remove it when not in use. 8 bolts, no problems... Easier than the v6 hitch install. Having a friend to help makes it super easy!!

Also as stated above, without the cutout, you will need to trim the bumper cover...

Silly me, I guess I just figured that the bumpers were the same and that there was a "punch out" for the hitch.

I'm certainly not going to pay $400+ for a new bumper. Not when I have a perfectly good Sawzall in the garage.

Dang, I was hoping it was a simple bolt on. I also want to avoid having anything that hangs down and cuts into my departure angle (that's one of the things I didn't like about the factory receiver on my 3rd gen, the way it hung down below the bumper.)

Given my short timeline, I may have to bite the bullet and get an aftermarket....

Then just go pay $150 for a nice aftermarket one. There's a link to the one I bought in the thread that I linked to above. There's also a picture of it installed so you can see what it'll look like.

I know exactly how you feel!! I have a 'Want to Buy' posting up right now for a baby (v6) hitch!!! My aftermarket hitch is scraped scratched and grinded from off roading!!! My 07 didn't come with any hitch when I bought it, so I went with the U Haul one.

I know a guy from AZFJ.org that can get the v6 hitch for a bit less than retail however it is still like $160!! I keep lurking on ebay and craigslist for one!!

Toyota has a port installed option for the hitch it retails for $245. its says for v6 model only though, part# 00016-89005. with some basic tools and a friend to help should be easy install.

I dunno if this helps but the FSM for the 2008 model tells how to install the trailer hitch onto the rear of the vehicle if you don't already have it.
