Replacing 4th Gen Tweeters

I am replacing the factory speakers in my 2003 4Runner. I am being told that the factory front tweeters are oval shaped and I will need a mounting bracket to install aftermarket tweeters in the front factory location.

Have you replaced the factory tweeters with aftermarket ones and what bracket did you use?

I replaced my stereo in my 2006, and, in short, yes you do need a bracket. The OEM tweeters themselves are not oval, but the mount that is incorporated into them is. So, to mount up the new tweeters an oval bracket is necessary that the aftermarket tweeters mount in, which then, in turn, is mounted in the door. Don't remember exactly where I got mine, but if you do some Google searching for speaker mounting adapters, or something along those lines, you should be able to find what you need. Hope this helps.

The "tweeters" themselves are round with "biscuit" shaped frames. They fit into this bracket:

It would be VERY easy to just use some 1/8" or 1/4" masonite or thin plastic sheet to make your own flat plate that will bolt into the OEM two-hole mount. Then just make the hole in the center to whatever size the new tweeter needs to flush mount.

I did this on my 03 4Runner, replaced all the JBL's with aftermarket. I used the tacotunes brackets, but had to modify them to fit my 1" silk dome tweeters, here's a couple pics.

Here's how mine came from TT

I drilled them out with a hole saw, then widened them by hand with a dremel

Rear ones installed, I did this for all 4 tweeters,

the center channel is the same speaker, but I put a 3.5" coaxial there, required some dash cutting though

Did you use the factory speaker wires or replace the factory wires with new?

Did you add a amplifier to the system?

I have already replaced the head unit.

I will be adding a 4 channel amp and replacing the front and rear components. I do not plan to replace the dash speaker.

Any tips you came up with will be appreciated.

USMC, well first thank you for your service.

I used all the stock wiring in my 03 Sport because I had the stock JBL amp so I didn't need to add additional power. On my 08 SR5 that I just bought, I replaced all my stock speakers with the aftermarket ones that I had in my 03 and they just don't get any power from the stock head unit. I just purchased a new head unit, a 4 channel amp, and all new component speakers. It really depends on how far you want to go, I will be running all new speaker wires to power off the amp, but if you already have a new head unit, you could always try that first and see if it's enough for you, or if you have the JBL amp, you shouldn't need a new amp
