Replacing cam seals...

I have a couple of the standard, full-size versions, and I just placed an order for the needle-nose ones for this specific job.

One Vise Grip pliers that I own which comes in handy rarely but does an excellent job with rounded or rusted bolt heads is the "locking wrench". It is actually a really good design and I have never seen anyone else with a set.

Did you get the cams off yet?
 
Not off yet. I suppose I am waiting for the chain wrench to arrive; I'm tired of tearing up the spokes inside the cam gears. The wrench won't be here until May 2nd or so :/ No local stores had one in stock that would fit the cam gear circumference.

I got the oil cooler hoses off, but again, I'll be waiting until the end of the month for the replacement hoses. I fiddled with installing the front sway bar endlinks instead; I'm waiting for parts for that too. I'm sitting in limbo without work to get accomplished. I have a steering pump line that needs replacing, but I don't want to take that apart until I have the engine in a condition to start it, for the final bleeding process. There is other crap I can work on but it's small stuff.
 
Here is my new tool. I'm really hoping this helps me. I will try it alone, to start. If I can't get it, I'll look for a second set of hands.

My new chain wrench worked like a charm. It was perfect; it's so nice to have the right tool for the job!
I cut a section of the old timing belt to wrap the cam gears and protect the teeth. Here is a photo of the arrangement. Getting those bolts to break free was still a big struggle. I had to get up on top of the radiator support and line the wrench and breaker bar up just right for leverage. The cam gear bolts must have been torqued to 150 ft/lbs! I got the seals pulled and replaced, hammering the new seals in with a 1-7/16" socket (I think). I also replaced the oil cooler hoses. sfg, your trick with the needle nose Vise Grips was helpful. Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

I'm starting to put things together, but there's a lot of work ahead of me to get the belt on and all the accessories adjusted. Slow and steady :)

 
The timing belt is installed and all marks are lined up; the tensioner pin is pulled. I need to rent the torque wrench to finish torquing the crank shaft bolt. I'm hoping that goes seamlessly using my new crank shaft pulley tool. After that, things should be pretty straight forward. Just the dirty work of adjusting accessories to get the accessory belts tight. I think I have completed the task that this thread was started for :) Thank you, everyone, for all the help and support!

Glad to here you finally got it. Here's mine when I did it too.



I don't think the cam shaft bolts get torqued more at the factory, I think bolts just kinda lock themselves into place, especially in spots were there is no "give" like between a large bolt and a large surface area. I see it all the time on the equipment I work on for a living.
Also, as a heads up, many people use a new crankshaft bolt. If you don't use a new bolt, put some BLUE loctite on the bolt, not red. The new factory bolt comes with Toyota's version of loctite on it.

Also, as a heads up, many people use a new crankshaft bolt. If you don't use a new bolt, put some BLUE loctite on the bolt, not red. The new factory bolt comes with Toyota's version of loctite on it.

Great job! You are almost home free. I think the hardest part is getting the new timing belt on.
 
I have done three 5vz timing belt changes. Two were easy, my own one was not so I had to improvise to get the new belt on

For me, I completely ignored the FSM. The trick I use (as well as many Toyota Master Techs) is to nearly remove the top idler pulley, start with the crankshaft, then put the cams on. So much easier that way. Don't need clips, and it takes me 3 minutes. It's right every time.

Before pulling the tensioner pin out, I torque the top idler pulley. There is not much strain on it.

Good point. I also make sure that I install the fan and torque those bolts before tensioning any of the belts.

Because this thread has been used to cover lots of my frustration and work doing my timing belt, I thought I'd put my updates here... The job is finished!!! I'm pretty happy. I started it up and it runs as smooth as ever. I had put on new accessory belts too. I broke the bottom bolts holding the radiator on, so I'll need to get replacements for that. To get the truck drivable again, I just need to flush and fill the cooling system.
