Replacing door checker

I'm surprised to see (via search) that there is very little to no information about this on our 3rd gens. Has anybody ever replaced the door checker in any of their doors? My front two doors flop around with zero tension. Anything I need to be aware of before I tear into it?

Are you talking about the button that tells your runner if the door is open or closed?

No, its the black arm that links the door to the door frame. When functioning properly, it keeps the door in place while open, typically in two different places. Ive replaced one on my wifes Honda Accord and the door functions like new again. The checkers in my t4r are totally shot.

I had this problem on my 4Runner, too. All four doors were reluctant to stay open. Drove me and the passengers absolutely insane. I lucked out and found all four door checkers from a low mileage 3rd gen that held the doors open. As far as I know, they're available new as well.

Yep, pull pivot pin and door panel bolt 'em in.

Where did you get replacements for these? I am in the same boat. Even on level ground the front doors have a hard time staying open by themselves.

Nevermind, found them. They're expensive little buggers.

Yeah, common issue with most Hondas made post 2000ish, but I've never heard about these wearing out on a Toyota. Bound to happen at some point I suppose.

Definitely a good idea to replace if you routinely load kids in the car. A forceful wind would have shut the door on on our son had I not been wedged between door and the frame of my wife's Honda.

Yikes! Just replaced another one on my wife's Honda this week and it was only $16.64 for the OEM part from a local dealer.

I did just the two fronts on mine recently:

They come out through the 'inside' of the door, so the inner panel has to come off to access for replacement.

Has anyone taken their old one apart? Wondering if it's the plastic or rollers that wear down, or if it's broken springs or something else that causes failure.

I inspected mine when I removed them. It's the plastic rod that wears down.

Junkyard then. Just find a 4runner whose doors stay open and you're gold.

If it matters, I took mine and squished the metal housing a bit in a vise.
This put more pressure on the plastic arm and held the doors open better.
Not necessarily a perfect, long-term solution, but it did work.

(My 2nd gen ones were designed way better...)

My dad's Nissan has this problem since brand new. It's a real shin buster sometimes. My truck doesn't yet but it's good to know it can be fixed.
