replacing glove box latch?

Has anyone done this? Can it be done easily?

I managed to break the latch by forcing it (stupid me) when it wouldn't open. I tore the plastic piece (latch handle) right off! After some fiddling I was able to get the box open, but it is broken. If I hold the plastic latch in place and jiggle it enough I can get the latch to work, but I might not be able to forever so want to sort this out now.

I can't seem to get the entire glove box out, it appears connected at the hinges. I was hoping I could replace the entire box maybe with one from a junk yard. I also can't figure out how to get the latch mechanism out so that I could replace only that. There are a couple screws inside the glove box behind the latch, but they seem to only hold it in place inside the glove box door and not actually let me take the door apart to get at the components.

Any suggestions?

The same thing just happened to me yesterday... I was able to remove the entire lock/latch assembly by just removing the two screws you mentioned, so try giving it a little wiggle. All of the components necessary to latch the box up are behind the handle you (and I) ripped off, so disassembling the whole door (hopefully) won't be necessary. With the latch off, you can close the box and keep it closed by threading something through the latching bar; I'm using a small binder clip. I've found the part at its cheapest at www.toyotaparts123.com for 13.49USD plus $10 shipping, but I don't know what shipping will be to BC. Thanks for the reply and and info! I'll have try removing the latch assembly this afternoon. I gald there is a simple replacement assembly available.

You are able to pull the whole glove box out. If you want I can pull mine out this afternoon and post up some picts. I had to pull mine out when I had my nav system installed. Might I add while you are back there to check your cabin air filter. To pull out the glovebox all you will need to do is unscrew the one screw on the right side. Pop off the mechanism that holds it up and let it fall all the way open. Give it a tug after it is open all the way, there are some plastic hinges in the back of it that just pop out. if you pull the back up it will come off. It does take a lot of force though.

Bump.. my glove box got stuck last night I forced it open and broke the latch.
Can the latch be fixed, or do I need to get the whole glove box?

Just broke my latch today. I took out the 2 screws and removed it now my glove box is hanging open...not ideal for a city. Wondering how it worked out for you guys. Does the dealership have this in stock or better to go online?

Just ordered my part for that site..... my freaking Toyota dealer wanted to replace the whole door, even though I stated that this piece came off and it was hard for me to imagine it not being available separately......they were adamant that the part needed was not available separately.... ripoff. (for the small amount of $380 + labor) .... no thanks.

I just wanted to say thanks as well! I took out my glove box to replace the cabin filter... I didn't have the glove box lined up exactly so I forced it... and sure enough broke the latch.

I'm noticing a lot of brokers selling on ebay just listing all OEM parts and they just order from these OEM sites.. was about to order #4 on ebay for $35 and saw it's only 15 bucks on the OEM sites.

After replacing the cabin filter I also had this problem with a stuck glove box latch. I had to break the latch's plastic locking tab to get the glove box open. Good thing it wasn't metal!
The cause: I failed to notice the left hinge had unsnapped from the pivot pin...so the latch was misaligned. $16.00 plus shipping to repair.
