Replacing main bearing for 94 Manual V6 4Runner

Hey fellow T4R members,

Recent ad came on my local craiglist for a classic 4Runner with 300K on a 3vzfe motor, paint looks immaculate, has decent offroad tires, interior is fairly dirty, but in the ad it says there is a drivetrain issue. Was wondering how difficult of a job it would be to replace, buying this truck as a project offroad car, it's a 4x4 runs and drives for $900, compared to the other listings for the same price, I don't think I can go wrong with a semi running toyota. I have a lot of free time, so time isn't an issue, but the difficulty of replacing the main transmission bearing is what I'm curious about.

Does he describe the issue?

Replacing a transmission bearing means you need to find and study the factory service manual.

You will need special pullers, measuring equipment, assortment of cclips and shims. A press of course. The capability to turn some special press tooling, tubing in various sizes and lengths. It's nothing easy.


You buy a replacement from marlin, that is what you do.

Bought the car for 1K, runs fairly well, but when I lightly put gas on the throttle in any gear it sounds like something is grinding. Either way I am going to do the 3.4L swap and get a donor R150 from either the local junkyard (6 of the same model currently at the junkyard), or I might buy a donor car in a nearby city for 650$. Either way I am excited to start this build. Thanks for the advice regarding the estimated cost and labor, but the dude I bought it from was a diesel mechanic who said don't bother rebuilding, there are enough donors to find a used R150, so I plan on looking for that.

Remove the rear driveshaft, run it in 4wd. That way you can err out the rear diff beariings.

Do you have a shake when you go from on gas to off gas?

Is the grinding noise constant speed with the engine?

R150 sounds like a plan!

It doesn't shake when going from on throttle to no throttle, it's sounds like a grinding noise when you tap the throttle the lightest it can be tapped, at more open throttles the noise goes away. It's easier to get the noise to be reproduced at higher gears so when in second you have to tap the throttle fairly lightly whereas in 4th the throttle range for when the noise is being heard it a little bit more. And the noise is arbitrary with engine speed, it'll make the same noise only when the throttle is lightly pressed.

why the price increase? multiple offers?

For the price increase, Im honestly not too sure why I listed $900, only can think of maybe my brain saw another 4Runner for $900, but the correct price of the vehicle was $1000. Im going to start a build thread for this car today, so I can track progress and get as much advice as possible.
