Replacing my trans cooler with a bigger one (70268 replaced with 70264)

I just ordered a B&M 70264 from Advance Auto online. Their coupon codes rock...I got $30 off with code BIG30. To my door it was only $58...which is $10 cheaper than Amazon (which usually has the best prices).

Anyway, I'm replacing my 70268 with this one, and I'll keep this thread updated with the results.



Currently, my 70268 is barely keeping the trans below 200 around town. Today I saw 192 for a good 30 mins while running around town for work. My goal is for 170 around town, and 120 on the highway. Hopefully the 70264 will do the trick.

After I got my scangauge, my temps were 170 - 180 around town and I saw up to 220 while offroading.

I replaced my ATF with royal purple and have not seen the trans temp above 180 since. Driving around town it's usually in the 150 - 160 range.

That seems pretty odd. Most guys are fine with the 70268. Maybe you have something else going on.

Well, some of it is due to the fact that I currently have the cooler mounted BEHIND the condenser. Which it's only rated at 75% efficiency there.

I know if I just moved it, I'd see some slightly lower temps. However, I'm pretty sold on the "cooler is better" line of thinking. I really don't want to ever see more than 170, unless it's extreme conditions. And the 70268 can't quite do that, even mounted in front. Plus I figure if I'm taking it all apart to move it, I might as well upgrade to the cooler that fits my driving better.

(My ATF is fresh Valvoline MaxLife, and the transmission shifts like a dream)

Where you live, I would definitely go with the 70264. The install should be a breeze....I've done 3 of them now, so I bet it only takes me like 20 minutes.

I wish i had better pics of my install, but this is my cooler. its the stock cooler out of a dodge pickup. got it at pick n pull for $13 or $18, i cant remember. Anyway, I regularly see temps of about 112 on the hwy when its less then 70 out. jumps up to 140 when is 100+ out. highest i EVER saw it was 188 romping through the dunes on pismo. It was probly 90*+ out on the sand and the cooler did great. All these temps are read of a SGII. The only down side, is it its sub freezing/just cold, it takes FOR ever to warm up. Anyway heres the pic of it in relation to the grill. When it stops raining and i remember to go do it, ill take some pics of it installed etc.

Wish they could get the codes for 96-98 trucks. I will be installing an actualy guage though and doing a cooler here shortly.

dang man all this tranny cooler talk and the ease of install is making me want to buy one of these too.

i saw them on Amazon for around $60, ive been lerking around at the different threads on these but dont think ive done good enough. sorry not trying to jack your thread but you may have convinced me to get the bigger one. Is there an ideal place to get these? Ii saw your post about advanced auto. Gosh the mods never do end do they lol!

You might be cooling too much. Minimum operating temp is 120°. ATF wants to be hot, just not burning.

I saw around 120° operating on the highway on the coldest winter days here in Boston with my 70268, which is just about perfect. We'll see how hot it gets this summer.

It came today. And I've got plenty of fresh Zerex Asian coolant ready to go, so hopefully within a week I'm going to drain the cooling system, take the radiator loose, remove my old cooler, mount the new one to the front of the condenser, remount the radiator, flush the cooling system, and hook up the new cooler.

Where are you picking up the temp from? I ghetto rigged my last analog gauge in by zip tie'n the sending unit to the out (hot) line and wrapping exhaust tape around it to seal it to the line. Wasn't pretty but it worked.

Scangauge II will read auto trans temp in 99+ 4runners. You have to program an X-guage but it works really well.

If you don't have a 99+ you'd have to rig up an after market sensor like you did.
