Replacing stock speakers in 2008 4Runner

OK, I'm curious... What kind of quality are the stock speakers in the 4Runner (2008)? The head unit in my truck is the Toyota OEM Nav (e7008 - i think) with the stock speakers. Crap? OK? Excellent?

If a person wanted to replace only the speakers what would you all recommend and what kind of improvement in sound could be expected? Just the speakers, not the nav or the amp.

I would recommend replacing the head unit before the speakers.

Same. I would also replace the head unit first. You will see a huge difference there! The factory speakers will sound better with an aftermarket or Scion Pioneer HU. Look that up in this section of the forums.

I appreciate the suggestions on upgrading the head unit, but my question was specifically about replacing the stock Toyota OEM speakers.

So your wondering what replacing just the speakers will do?

I would say not very much, but noticeable. Aftermarket speakers are designed to operate with a certain RMS and stock head units can not put out that RMS.

Yes, exactly. I've read comments on the forum from folks saying the stock speakers weren't very good, so I wondered what kind of improvements could be attained from replacing the stock speakers.

I'm aware that replacing the head unit (in my case the Toyota nav unit) could increase the quality of sound, but was curious about the difference I could expect when replacing the stock speakers.

Id like to addon to this if i may.

Im wanting to upgrade my audio in my truck as well.

I too was thinking of upgrading my speakers mostly for quality.

I dont mind replacying head unit, what worries me is having the Nav that came with the limited something would go wrong, or is it
simple plug and play with any system with a screen with nav abilites? would be good to go and work even with the reverse camara?


I will most likely not get a sub box and all that, i like keeping lots of space in the back. A sub in the side wall is all i need, i just want to have a very clean sound that bumps good inside the truck. Dont need people across the state to here me.

To go through the trouble of changing the OEM Speakers out and not the headunit, is not worth it in my opinion. My factory radio, that was not JBL, sounded like a$$! After replacing the headunit first, sound went WAY up tremendously. The factory units are simply not powerful enough to push any aftermarket speakers.

With that being said i have alwayes been a fan of kenwood and found a shop near my home that has every option that i know of in the unit including a nav setup.

I assume that i would have to use whatever system nav is with that unit? and would i have to do anything crazy so the cammara works with it?

If you search these forums, I remember seeing that someone had hooked up a back-up camera on their aftermarket nav. I don't know if came with a back-up camera from the factory, our he rigged it up.

I agree ..you need to upgrade the HU first. I just put a new one and is not the best ...Is a Boss 5.5" detachable touhscreen.... but the freaking sound its wayyyy and I mean wayyy better noww... even without upgradin the speakers. Now Im in the process of getting some subs and Im thinking about the tube amplified subs....to save space and upgrade the stock speakers before I blow em up...because they can't handle the power . I Just put it on volume level 10 only 1/4 of the volume limit and it sounds like they going to explode! so I need to upgrade ASAP...The video quality is very good too..when i put a movie or music video it souns like if you in the movie theater...defintely aftermarket HU buddy...

Ok, ill keep roaming the audio/electronic forms see if i see anyone talking about having to wire up the rear cammara and all.

also JAC or anyone else that may know, your BOSS came with its ok NAV upgrads/cds like the factory does? or is that more you have to buy and addon?

To answer your question about the Nav...NO..it doesn't have the upgrades....I really wasn't worrying about that due to the fact that I have a portable Garmin Nuvi and also my cellhpone has GPS...I really wanted it for music and videos + it is like $300 less that the one a really wanted +I like the fact that it is detachable so it wont be a temptation for the thieves (I don't have an alarm...lol.)
So I'm planning on keeping this one until I get an alarm system then replace it with a 7" touch screen multimedia. maybe Kenwood or Pioneer

I just replace the front and rear speakers in my 2006 4Runner.
I installed Infinity Reference 6020cs component speakers in the front doors, and Infinity Reference 5020cs component speakers in the rear doors. I kept the factory head unit, used Dynomat in both front and rear doors, and set the tweaters to the low db setting on the crossovers.
WOW! A truly remarkable difference. Very clean mids and highs, and more than enough bass. I think what makes the difference is that Infinfity is 2 ohm, as opposed to 4 ohm.

I did the same thing with mine using the same speakers, the volume and clarity, especially in the mid and high frequencys, is outstanding compared to the stock speaker system.

Replacing the stock speakers without upgrading the headunit would be a waste IMO. You would get better sound doing it the other way around and replacing the headunit and pushing the stock speakers with a little more power.

To get good sound, you will want to replace the HU, speakers, and get an external amp to power them. Most headunits, even aftermarket, aren't powerful enough to power any high quality speakers.

The sky is the limit, and if you're anything like me, you'll probably end up spending way more money than you originally anticipated.

If you are a smart shopper, you could probably get a pretty decent system with GPS, DVD, etc. replace the headunit, speakers, and add a sub all for around $1800 installed. It may sound like alot, but wiring and installation add up.

If you can't afford to do it all at once, alot of people do it piece by piece. I'd start with the headunit. Make sure you do your homework on each brand and see which one suits your needs. Eclipse is the most compatible for Toyota, everything is pretty much plug n play. Kenwood seems to be well liked too.
