Replacing Stock Speakers

Hello forum! I just recently got a 1998 limited edition, after totaling my 2000, and was looking for some new speakers. I'm not worrying about getting a subwoofer or amplifier until I get speakers for sides of the car.

Firstly, I was wondering exactly how many speakers there are that I could replace (front,middle,rear), where they are, and the sizes for each of them.

Secondly, I was asking what type of speaker brand you all recommend that is decently inexpensive (not trying to drop 600$ on these speakers) and work very well: as in loud and have good bass. Also, I was wondering if y'all had any specific types of speakers (like links of them) that would be a good fit for loud and good bass.

Lastly, would you all recommend buying another new receiver (radio) and/or any other parts to go along with them. I am not looking to buy anything else down the road (besides sub and amp) once I get these.

I have seen some other speaker forums for 3rd gens but most are outdated, and i would like to have some updated information. Thanks so much!! Any comments are appreciated.

I really like the 6 1/2" kicker speakers I got from Walmart. I haven't replaced the tweeters yet.

Got these components in the front. Don't skimp on the fronts because this is where most of the sound imaging comes from. Very clean bass from these. The tweeters fit perfect, as well as the speakers themselves.

Got these in the the rear doors. I modified the original housing. Have to be aware of the speaker depth because the window may hit it when it rolls down if the speakers are too deep, although these fit fine.

I HIGHLY suggest using Dynamat or similar material on the doors. Basically turns the doors into a speaker enclosure. Also, gets rid of those annoying vibrations.

To attain the loudness and bass you're looking for you really need an amp. There are many different amps. Don't skimp here either. This is what I got, which handles the speakers fine, but there's many to pick from.

Lastly, this is the subwoofer I got which fits perfectly under the passenger seat. It's a powered sub woofer, so it doesn't take any power away from the amp

My goal with my setup was not to cut any of the trim panels(at least on the outside) and not to take away any space from the back.
One other thing, you'll definitely want a better head unit to run all the new speakers etc. This is similar to what I have.

I like it because you can angle the display to deal with sun glare, which was one of the main reasons I almost didn't buy a touch screen at first.

No, the OEM speakers are 4" so you need to modify the mounting.

I don't have subs in the back. There are no subs in a stock 3rd gen 4Runner

Okay so if I got 6.5 and 4 then i wouldn't need to do any modifying?? Why then did you recommend 5.25?

Pretty sure the rear doors are not 4", they are 5.25".

Here is my setup, I'm no audiophile so all I know is what I like, and I like this setup. I never bothered to upgrade the rear speakers, I think a sub would be a better idea.

I literally just went through this last week so here are my comments while this is still fresh in my mind.

The stock speakers in my 2002 were shot so everything got a mild budget minded upgrade.

I've always been a fan of the soundstage Component speakers add and went with Crutchfield's house brand "Sound Ordinance" 6.5" component speakers for the front. You can easily mount the tweeters on the factory tweeter brackets with some hot glue or 3M trim tape. The crossovers can be 3M taped to the backside of the door panel so they protrude into the relief cut for the window.

As others said rear speakers are optional but any OEM paper cone speaker in our trucks will likely be worn. You may also want to go with a small amp to get the most from your speakers. I went with a Clarion mini 4 channel amp and am extremely happy with it so far.

These speakers won't wow any true audiophiles but they're truly impressive for the price. They avoid the shrill tweeter heavy sound many low cost component speakers have and with amplified power have good mid bass.

How's the rear window roll down with those speakers? The top mount depth is 2 1/8" compared to 2" for the Polk DB651's I ended up going with. Using the included adapter ring I was able to clear the rear window by about 1/16".

Its close but clears fine. The supplied adapter from Crutchfield adds .158" which was needed.

Warning, I'm not a guru but I know my way around most things audio.

Under the drivers seat or where the factory amp was?

A lot guys here run plug and play style amps and install them where the factory amp used to be. Alpine, Pioneer and Clarion all offer up good one. They all put out about 45 RMS per channel. Here's a link to the Alpine:

If you want to go with something that fits under the drivers seat you have a lot of options. I was able to BARELY squeeze a Hifonics ZRX1016.4 Zeus under there. I rewired all the speakers to the amp location with 14 gauge speaker wire. I also ran 0 gauge to under the drivers seat to a distribution box. Then 4 gauge runs to the Zeus and my monoblock that powers my sub in the rear. It's way more work then plug and play. I scored the Zeus for way under retail though and wanted a true 4 channel amp with individual gain and pass filters.

The advantage of the plug and play is it's easy. The advantage of a larger 4 channel amp is you can tune it way more to your liking. Here's a link to to Zeus and a photo of just how big that thing really is. lol

That is very similar to my setup, just different brands. I really like how a simple setup like that sounds. If you ever want to put sound proofing material in the doors it gets even better!

The 8" Sound Ordinance or 8" Blaupunkt sub might do the trick. I don't own either, (I have a 10" Blaupunkt sub in the back, love it) so I cannot comment on fitment but as long as you don't have the rear heater option, something like that should work.

Thanks man. I guess I need to brush up on my reading comprehension skills. The question was indeed for a sub that fits under the seat not an amp. lol That amp I posted up thread does fit though and my 10" sub in in the passenger rear quarter panel. What used to be the storage box in now my sub box.

check out my sub and amp. Kenwood 5 channel amp. Powering the 10" sub and 4 kickers. Sounds awesome. Not to much but enough to enjoy the music. Rather then running each separate wire for each speaker. I simply ran a 9 wire. And you just tap into the oem harness and the other end is for the amp and one wire left for powering the amp. Doesnt get any easier
