I posted this on 3rd gen and figured I'd see what he 5th gen owners had to say. Old and new 4runners. My oldest daughter managed to steal the 2001 from me and turned it into a beach mobile.

So i had to replace it with a 2016 Trail Edition but I don't like the wheels or lift. I bought it from a guy (had 4k miles on it) who did a 3" coil lift and added the aftermarket wheels (275/75/17). They rub when I'm backing up and it makes me want to punch a baby.

i'm thinking about putting the wheels from the '16 on the '01. I'm guessing they'll clear with a 3" toytec suspension lift and a 1" body lift.

one of the suggestions was to run spacers but I'm not sure i want to do that. Makes me a little nervous. I know I can trim them but I don't want to over do it.

Is the rubbing on the body mount or the fender liner? Do you have stock upper control arms? If not, do you have recent alignment specs?.

your 2001 has 16' rims right? They probably won't clear the 5th gen brake calipers.

Wheel spacers will make rubbing worse.

It takes 15 -30 minutes an you won't need to punch any babies. I was asking about the alignment b/c you want to max out the caster with a 3' lift getting as close to +4 as possible. This pushes you wheels a bit fwd, away from the body mount. Trimming the fender is cake and cheap compared to a body mount chop.

If the rubbing is the only thing that irritates you, mod the liner and problem solved. The aftermarket lifted suspensions also get rid of the stock nose dive problem. If its the height that gets under your skin, new tires, new rear coils and adjusting the front shock heights will cost quite a bit more.

Also, check to see if the previous owner did a diff drop as you will probably want one to correct the geometry.

16" wheels will not fit any 5th gen. 17" is the minimum diameter to clear the brake calipers. Spacers will not fix the issue. 17"+ only.

I think we're getting 16's mixed up. 16" wheels vs 2016....to many 16's!

I'm thinking about putting the wheels from the '16 on the '01. 2016 4runner wheels onto the 2001 not 16" wheels on the 2016.

I did the fender liner mod to accommodate 285/70/ 17's on a stock suspension while I saved up an purchased a lift. I had rubbing, on the body mount, in reverse at full lock. Not sure if I would have to do the liner mod if I lifted first.

My tires have a 32.7' diameter, yours have a 33.24' diameter and are a bit skinnier, but you still have rub on your fender, therefore same mod, for different reasons.

Spacers can also cause rubbing, so although the reasons for rub are different, the fender liner mod is applicable in all 3 scenarios.

If you are not rubbing on you body mount, no need to even consider cutting your frame.

regarding the pro version, just do a quick google search and see where to trim your lower bumper corners. Again, cheap mod. maybe buying a razor knife and a file/ rasp if you don't already have them.

When I get a bigger garage, I'm adding a 1/2" spacer in front and a diff drop. I have just enough clearance to get in if there is snow packed under the garage door.
