Resale Value: 2011 4Runner vs. 2011 Pilot

I found this to be fairly interesting. We purchased a 2011 Pilot and a 2011 4Runner within 7 months of each other:

1. 2011 Pilot EX 2wd - purchased 5/10; $30,800 drive out; 20K miles
2. 2011 4Runner SR5 2wd - purchased 12/10; $31,800 drive out; 28K miles

I thought their current used car values would be similar but the resale vaue (according to KBB):

1. Pilot - trade in value - $24,500 (excellent condition) / private party - $25,900 (excellent condition)

2. 4Runner - trade in value - $27,400 (excellent condition) / private party - $28,700 (excellent condition)

The bottom line is that the 4Runner is worth $1800 - $2800 more than the Pilot in spite of having more miles (or net $800 - $1800).

You bought both vehicles used, so there is a possibility you got a better deal on the T4R to begin with?

What were the actual book values when you bought the two vehicles?

We kept the options to a minimum knowing that our SUV's were going to get destroyed by our 2 and 5 year old kids. We agreed that the smart thing to do is to buy a practical family vehicle that we didn't mind messing up. With that being said, no extra options on the Honda. On the 4Runner, got the power seats and the running boards.

My bad. So what was the MSRP on both of the vehicles?

It seems like the 4Runner is a better value (which is one of the reasons I talked my wife away from the Pilot).

I told my wife--The Pilot and Highlander are really just Minivans disguised as SUV's...look at the seat layout...Haha, my wife hates minivans so that was enough to convince her to go with the 4runner. :trophy:

I think the MSRP for the 4Runner was $30,305. Add in the power seats, running boards and the destination charge and it increases to $32K or so. The MSRP on the Pilot was $31,170 or close to $32K by the time you factor in the destination charge. Price wise, I think it's apples to apples. You are absolutely right, the Pilot is a minivan on stilts. Glad you got the 4Runner.
