One more option - an Ultragauge can read and write over CEL codes as well and it gives me a chance to show the Spiker Engineering bracket I installed tonight doing it's thing....the stock handhold mounting screw that holds the bracket in place actually came out without a messy extraction due to the thread-locker Toyota used (cordless drill on slow with clutch off and pushing hard with a brand new bit). YMMV.

Isn't it recommended to always disconnect the negative terminal first?

Absolutely, unless it's a 6V positive ground 1955 Ford pickup.
