Resetting MAINT REQD light?

For a few bucks you can buy your own OBDII code reader. With it, you can read and reset codes. Some will also give an abbreviated description of the code (codes) although they are available on-line. I've had one for years and it has paid for its self several times. No, you can't turn off your seatbelt chime with it; or do any programming, but it's real handy as is. For example, on our Tundra I have had to change two O2 sensors over the years. Both threw a code telling me which one (of the 4) it was and what it was. A quick trip to the auto parts store, a little work and I was good to go for cheap! Even if you don't do your own work, it's a good idea to know what the fault it - reduces the rip-off factor.

Been several years since I got mine. It's pretty basic and just reads codes. You can reset them if desired. You'll have to research what the newer readers can do. Some can read other parameters and not just faults that throw a code.

Ah. Found it. Page 493. You have to have the ODO set at Trip A before the trick will work.

Now if I can just figure out how to turn off the seatbelt dinger. It says in the manual it is customizable but doesn't say how.

Resetting the Maintenance Light on the 4Runner by bulldog

The maintenance light is programmed to come on at about 7500 miles after last reset. It will actually start to stay on longer after starting at about 5000 miles after the last reset.

Here are the simple steps to reset it yourself if you do your own oil changes, or if the dealer forgets to do it.

TSB EL002-03 has these instructions:

1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:

i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off

6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.

Maintenance Light will not turn off

My 2010 4Runner SR5 4x2 has the maintenance light on, and it won’t turn off at all, I’ve tried resetting on TRIP A, B, and even ODO, while putting the ignition OFF and ON, although the mileage on the trips will go back to ZERO, but it doesn’t show the dashes and OF COURSE the light won’t turn off, does anyone know of a case like mine, what should I do?

YAY!!!!!!!! I finally figured this out. so annoying. bought 4runner used and dealership told me absolutely nothing. I googled this and the answer it gave me was wrong. now I don't have to reset EVERY time I start car.

2019 manual has it on page 345, paraphrased here.

1 [with engine running] Use the DISPLAY button to display trip meter A
2 Turn engine off
3 Press the DISPLAY button and keep it pressed
4 Turn ignition to the on position but do not start vehicle
5 Continue to press and hold the DISPLAY button until the trip meter displays "000000"
6 Release the DISPLAY button

It’s simple.
Turn ignition to acc while pushing in on the trip odo. Mine shows a progress bar with some language about the maintenance being reset so hold until the progress bar is finished.

well my Toyota dealer refuses to turn the seat-belt chime off. They say it is a liability issue. I have a call in to the manager since the manual says it can be done, but we shall see. The issue is that I am in Anchorage and there are no other Toyota dealers here..........

I am already fighting with Toyota about the lack of mudguards (I claim that they are required by law in Alaska) and have brought in the AK DOT + DMW in the mix so I am expecting zero help from Toyota in seat belt chime issue
