Reverse backup Alarm Mod

My 97 has no dash indicator to show the gear I am in other than beside the shift lever. JDM models have an alarm when the car/truck is in reverse.

A week ago I got off the truck to take my 5-year-old to school by shifting the shift lever into P (I usually get it to N) with park brake on. Then got back in and shifted it by 1 step (assuming I was at N). Thankfully I gave a little gas and the truck went backward a bit, so I quickly stepped on the brake.

I would have been in a bad situation but I was lucky that day. Since that day I wanted to install an alarm. I want it bit close to JDM. I came across an alarm from a Cruiser 100 series! It works great so I wired it into the reverse light by the quarter panel on driver side.

Now, it gives an alarm as soon as I shift into reverse!!!

Had to take the tail light off and then the panel a bit.
Spice the + wire to the backup light and the other (-) to the ground. That's all!

They are pretty simple to install. We have to put them in our work trucks. It gets to be a bit annoying by the end of the day but there's a reason we have to have them.

I put one on my work van years ago, annoying af when you're backing out of your driveway at 0500 to go to work, but they serve a purpose

Short story time.

Back up alarms are a good thing — too bad the ice truck that was delivering ice to a store my grandfather was managing didn't have one.

One day (25 years ago) a new driver showed up in a new truck and my grandfather walked out to unlock the coolers for him to make his delivery. Unfortunately, as my grandfather was unlocking the coolers and had his back to the parking lot, the driver decided to back up closer to the coolers so it would be less work moving the ice. My grandfather never heard the truck that crushed him against the machine.


Good thing he was a crusty old bastard who fought in WW2 and been through plenty of serious shit though. He was pretty pissed off after getting crushed and having most of his ribs fractured along with his hip and other internal squish-injuries. He survived, but never quite fully recovered from the injuries sustained that day.

They don't make them like that anymore — my grandfather or ice trucks without alarms.
