Revisiting the driveshaft clunk(At 36,400 )

However, my 2007 is in the fifth model year of the 4th generation and they had five years to address and fix the problem... with the harmonic and driveshaft issues.

FIVE YEARS.

Not doing anything about this leads me to believe that they're selling DEFECTIVE product!

And no, there's no whine here, just disappointment!

They could have addressed this prior BEFORE they sold all the vehicles.

I got 'caught' and trust me, this will NOT happen again with Toyota. :

BTW, the clunk is not once or twice a day... it's virtually ALL the time. Imagine coming to every stop and hearing and feeling clunk-clunk-clunk!

Or feeling the harmonic vibraqtion every time I go past the 1600+RPM on the tach or keep it there at 55 mph.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, i would be totally piss if i was in your position!

The Lexus GX got the fix in 2006 or something...so, it took them also 3 years of GX owners complaining for Lexus to do anything. They tried all sorts of temporary fixes to get the owners of their back.

I wonder if any 2008 4runner owners are having this problem?? It is pretty sad if 2008 4runners still have this problem. BTW, has anyone checked with the parts department if the suspension parts number are different in 2008 4runners vs. earlier 4runners???

Climb14er, I can certainly understand why you would be frustrated. There is no excuse for those kinds of oversights by Toyota, especially for a vehicle that costs comfortably north of $30k in most cases.

Just out of curiosity, what dealer have you been dealing with? I have dealt with Stevenson Toyota West and they have been great. But like you mentioned, this fix is not necessarily up to the dealer to decide.

I have not experienced the harmonic drone, and to be honest, I really don't know what it is and what causes it. I guess I would know if I had it.

As far as the clunk goes, I started to experience at about 2k miles. Very mild and not really audible, just a slight bump or lunge feeling right after I would come to a complete stop. I took my car to Stevenson and they lubed the driveline which kept the clunk at bay until just before my 10k. Starting at the 10k mile oil change, I have been lubing the driveline myself (all 6 fittings) and that seems to work well. I start to experience it mildly again right before oil changes, then it seems to go away after I lube it again.

FWIW, I bought my 4R brand new last June, so towards the end of the '07 model year. My 4R has the V8 and 4x4. My 4R has ~19k miles on it now.

I'm dealing with Stevinson East.

Like I said, the guys have been great... all except for the Toyota Corporate regional service manager, et al.

I've lubed the driveline all the way through and the clunk has been getting worse.

The 4Runner is going in next week and they'll use the GM grease, remove the driveshaft, grease the yoke and other parts and we'll see what happens.

My sense tells me that the parts used, basically do not fit and the vehicle is 'unloading' on the driveline and the clunk is the movement of the driveshaft and yoke.

It sounds similar to a Detroit metal car with 130K miles and the rear is dropping when you come to a stop. We've all heard and experienced this in very well worn vehicles.

The vehicle is NOT tight, at least the driveline isn't.

This was a loaded Sport V8 and with taxes, lots of extras, etc, price was a bit over 36K... if I remember correctly.

Coupled with the vibration in the front, both have been recognized by Toyota and both have been ignored for a permanent fix.

That's the frustrating part!

I usually purchase my vehicles used, with very low mileage, two to three years old, depreciated... this was my first new vehicle purchase in many years.

It will be my last new vehicle purchase... you can count on that! :
