Revo's or Destination AT's

One thing that really bothers me about this snowflake symbol thing is that there are so many different types of conditions that we must drive in the winter.

How does the test work? Do they actually test in snow? If so, what type of snow? Is it dry snow? Wet snow? How deep is the snow? An inch or two? Ten inches? How cold? Well below freezing or just below freezing? What type of road conditions? Asphalt? Concrete? See my point? There are just so many variables to consider.

Does anyone know the specifics of the testing procedures? I am curious to know.

Exactly, although the symbol may not cover all the conditions that a driver may go through, it still represents a standard to compare Tire A with Tire B. Your question applies for crash testing too. Not all crashes follow the crash test criteria. I guess that you can email these guys: American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or U.S. Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

ive had the bfg AT KOs on my ranger and they did pretty good through 2 winters. wear was well and they were pretty quiet for an AT.

never tried the revos.

but how can you compare a 5000lb tahoe to a 3800 lb 4runner?

Isn't the 4runner 4500 lbs or somewhere near there??

depends on the year. cars.com says my 01 is 3,975 lbs. i think the 99s were 3800 and the new (4th gens) were int he 4200 range.

Some tires are better in the rain, some in the snow, some on dry pavement, cornering on dry/wet, hydroplaining, some off-roading, etc. Each tire has their pros and cons. Every person has different needs for the diving conditions they drive in. Different vehicles themselves work differently with the same tires, even if they are the same type (car, SUV, pick-up, 2WD, 4WD). There is no one tire that works best with all these variables. Each person needs to determine what their priorities are and then try and determine what tire best fits their needs.

My needs were for a vehicle type (2WD compact pick-up with a supercharger) that has probable the most severe traction problem of any vehicle type. I

Koz, i never argued with you that REVOs are no good on the streets...they are excellent. You have never mentioned (or i have seen) that your REVOs were on your 2wd truck before...which makes your REVOs arguments in the past weaker, esp. in relation to it's use on a 4x4 4runner.

I believe that most (if not all) true snow tires have the snowflake symbol, which leads me to believe that it is a standard that most (if not all) snow tires must pass. Thus, any non-snow tires that have the symbol must be pretty decent in the white stuff. And because the symbol also means more sales in the winter months, i would believe that most (if not all) manufacturers would pursue this symbol IF their tire qualify...as you can see with Firestones, Bridgestones, Nokian, Michelins, BFG, General Grabber, etc.. It's simple economics IMHO.

My opinion was always based on the "E" rated "LT" 31x10.5x15 REVOs used on a supercharged PreRunner (w/TRD off-road pkg), which has to have the WORST traction problem of any type of vehicle. Thai, this may explain your comprehension problem:biggrin2:. Please explain this comment

I was basically saying they were both on suv's and not 1 on a suv and 1 on a pick up since the weight distribution is quite different.....no worrys its all relatively proportionate.

Hint: 2wd prerunner pickup truck is no where like a 4runner in traction, weight, or balance. In addition, you have not had any experience off-road with REVOs either.

Things that make you go...hmmmmm.:D

Thai, do you know what a PreRunner is? It was designed for desert racing. It has 12" of ground clearance, rear locker (4.10 gears), Bilstein coilovers, skid plates, LT 31" tires STOCK! I've done more off-roading with the PreRunner then with my Limited 4Runner. The PreRunner is an amazing off-road vehicle considering it is 2WD and has no low range.

And your point is?? Do you have pics of your PreRunner off-road?? I have never seen one off-road (honest truth).

If you off-road, then you should have bought BFG AT KO or Goodyear SA.:D

You still have not answered my question...why do you think Bridgestone did not pursue snowflake symbol on the REVOs if it performed sooo well in snow/ice??? Bridgestone clearly support this symbol. What's your theory?

Don't forget...there are different types of offroading. A vehicle good in one type of offroading may not be good at another type.

For example...a dune buggy...good for running the sand dunes or desert trails...but probably not so good at rocky or mud trails...

Very true.

My guess is; REVOs are probably one of the best selling tires for Bridgestone and by putting the snowflake on the REVOs may take sales away from their dedicated winter tires.

Koz , that pre-runner must be a blast to drive.

Do you have a pic ?

Do use it for street or just off road events ?

You know the more I think about the tire debate here , there are just to many variables really to tell , really about anything, just thing how many there can be from vehicle weight , type of conditions , how hot or cold it is outside , air pressure , ect,..... Maybe if I had a few less pounds in my tires and was a different type of snow they might have worked even better , some parts of the country get a lot of powder snow and others like us here in Wi. living by Lake Michigan get more heavy wet compacted snow.

All in all people (including myself) , can't really judge how a tire works , but only in the situations they drive in , if that makes any sense and the opinion should only be for the situation they are driving in and its really only their perception of how it handles the terrain.

My wife has BS Duelers ( the reg. ones) on her 4x4 Escape ( soon to be replaced by a 4x4 V6 Rav ) she thinks are the greatest thing in the snow others here might disagree.

Ah well...........:D

The only difference between a PreRunner and a 4WD Tacoma is the front diff. You may have seen one on the trails and not even knew it was 2WD. It even has the 4WD brakes (4 piston calipers and bigger rotors).

Damn that looks clean !! Nice truck. It cool she enjoys that stuff, good for her !

Do you have different or wider rims on it ?? looks like they stick out farther than others , good stance .

Those are the stock wheels and the stock sized tires (31"x 10.5" x15"). Those are the "E" rated LT REVOs. They are the 4th set of tires I put on that truck, trying to find a set that work in the bad weather.
