Howdy,
My search-Fu must be pretty weak because I can't find squat about this on the forums this evening. If you find a thread that will help me out please point me in the right direction.
Anyway....I've been reading through the threads about the "stealth" roof rack mounting for light bars. I like the idea but about everything I've seen appears that adding the light bar between the front rails is going to kind of block the use of my factory crossbars for my roof "bubble" (big plastic cargo pod) and/or my kayak racks. I've been looking for alternative light bar mounts and they all seem to be made for american trucks with "gutters".
The alternative is to screw on a metal bracket on the edge of the door frame to basically simulate the gutter area. I really don't want to start running screws into my rig. I've got a couple of tiny rust spots I need to address quickly but in FL, plastic rusts so more holes in the paint just seems to be a bad idea.
So....my latest bad idea is to get a roof rack with towers/crossbars that clamps on to the area between the roof "trench" and the edge of the door frame. I've seen some universal mounts but most companies want you to give the specifics of your vehicle so you order the properly sized "feet" or clamps for your application. Every site I hit immediately directs you to buying crossbars rather than a clamp on system since the T4R has a factory rack.
Long story short....I just measured the area in question of my neighbors Tacoma and they're within about 1/8" and by my calibrated eyeball appear to be the same angle/shape. The roof-line is a bit narrower but that should be OK since the towers fit anywhere along the crossbars.
Has anyone else every had this bad/great idea?? What rack did you use?? I found a Rhino Rack 2500 Universal on Craigslist new in the box for cheap. I figure if this works maybe I can hock the other setup to another member on the cheap and we'll both have a "custom" removable light bar mount.
