Rim bubbling solution: Powercoat?

My 08's rims have some bubbling, and in some spots the finish is gone. I DO NOT want to paint them black or plasti-dip them. Id prefer to get them powdercoated. Just wanted to see if anyone out here has done this, or maybe had a better solution?

Also, anyone know how much something like a powdercoating-of-rims would set one back?

If you don't have another set of rims to mount in the mean time, powdercoating becomes a difficult proposition. You have to have the wheels taken off and tires dismounted, the wheels need to be sandblasted and powdercoated, then the tires have to be remounted and balanced and installed back on the car. You are probabably looking at $100-150 for the dismount/remount, and ~$250-300 for the powdercoat, and the downtime between getting them dismounted and to the powdercoater.

Shop around! It's seems everything is cheaper in the U.S. so make some calls and find some deals.

I was quoted by a local shop at $50 per wheel.

Another alternative would be to purchase some used wheels, get those powder coated and run 2sets of wheels and tires. (winter/summer)

Powder coating

I purchased a set of 5 FJ Cruiser wheels for my 200 tundra originally had them powder coated black and they are now on my 05 4runner and have over 60k miles and look great! i don't do alot of off roading but I am a huge fan of powder coating wheels. Get a set of factory take off FJ wheels, sell the tires off of them, and get them powder coated. Then sell your 4runner wheels/tires. If you do it right you will have very little $ out of pocket except for tires.

I paid $150 (cash discount) to have 5 wheels done. I know you're on the wrong side of the country but for local pacific northwesters i took mine to C&T Powder Coating in Olympia, Wa. It took a week or so but i was very happy with how they turned out

Currently, i've got my wheels off at the powdercoater now. My wheels are the 20" XSP wheels and it was $100 per wheel + mounting. Might be a little cheaper to strip them down yourself if they are bubbling. Most likely it will need to be sandblasted.

Can you post a picture of the bubbling? I'm on a global team trying to identify clear coat deterioration and provide wheel cleaner manufacturers and the American Car Wash association with guidelines on what chemicals to avoid.

We have already identified two brands which cause significant deterioration of clear coats used on wheels due to their use of hydrofluoric acid.

The worst being Eagle One - in fact, if you put a piece of raw aluminum in Eagle One it will immediately start fizzing as the aluminum is attacked.

My Limited wheels are bubbling, so I bought a set of Sport Edition Wheels for winter use. I plan on getting my Limited wheels refinished next winter.

Microbyte, it's funny you mention wheel cleaners causing bubbling. I bought my T4R from Performance Toyota last year and didnt notice bubbling upon purchase. Next day I took it to Cloister Car Wash and soon after noticed peeling started. I try to take a pic for you tomorrow.
