I'll be doing this soon!

S/C Nose cone Rebuild/ aFe Filter/ URD 2.2" pulley

|February 9, 2012|

Today was productive!

I spend the afternoon at BigFishAllDay's house rebuilding the supercharger. My nose cone bearing had become worn out recently and was making noise, so a nose cone job was in order.

About the nose cone replacement:
The bearings and phelonic adapter in the nose cone of the TRD supercharger units are only known to last about 100k miles. Once they are worn out, you will hear it. On the 2nd gen (black) units, all you need to do is order a replacement nose cone and swap it out. On the 1st gen (gray) units, you have to remove the supercharger and send it to magnusson performance in California for a rebuild.

You can barely hear it, listen for the high pitched whistle, that was the bearing in the nose cone.

For the 2nd gen superchargers, the part you need is PTR29-35042.
My dealer quoted me $350. But I found one online and had it to my door for Less than $250.
3.4 4TH Gen Nose Cone Kit PTR29-35042

The Job was fairly simple. Time consuming of course, but very strait forward. Here is a thread on CustomTacos that I used for reference while I replaced the nose cone. It took about 3 hours. but that included more than just a nose cone job.

Other parts I ordered were:

URD 2.2" pulley..
Underdog Racing Development

aFe Pro Dry S air filter,
Air Filters Direct Fit aFe Power Magnum FLOW OER Air Filter; Pro 5R; Toyota Tacoma 95-04 V6 30-10013 - aFe Power

Genuine TRD Oil filler cap:

NGK spark plug wires (blue)

And a replacement Bypass valve.
Supercharger Accessories - 5VZ TRD Bypass Valve

You can see my old bypass valve was broken. The 3 rivets holding the cylinder to the bracket had broken off. The zip ties were the only things holding it on.. and they were not doing a very good job.

New one vs. Old one:

Air filter:
My K&N filter was starting to cause me problems. The oiled media mixed with the dust from the dirt road I lived on mixed and really gunked up the filter. It got gunked up really fast. Got the the point that I was cleaning this filter every month, and that wasn't enough.. To fix this, I ordered a Dry media filter. Dry filters are MUCH better suited for dirt roads and are easier to clean!

All done!

I threw in some NGK wires and a genuine TRD Oil filler cap for good measure!

I also replaced my upstream O2 sensor.
I did not have the engine code, but my mileage had been a bit down recently. Figured this could help me get some of it back.

There are a large number of O2 sensors our trucks use, here is a list of which ones you need: http://www.urdusa.com/index.php?cPath=9_13

Old vs new:
You cant really tell, but the old one was quite coated in soot.

Looks like the SC had more miles on it than the original owner claimed....

How's it running after all that work???

excellent write up! I too am thinking of ditching my k&n for something a bit less messy. are you running a 7th injector? or any fuel system upgrades for that matter?

Its all good. Claimed it had 80k on it. Nose cones last to about 100k.

Everything works great! Very happy with all that I got done.

Thanks! Yes I do have the 7th inj. Check page one for the info you seek.

Why did you not use the dynamic tensioner? Any reason, or just didn't come with it?

Good choice, it like it was made to fit there
That's what she said That's what she said That's what she said That's what she said That's what she said That's what she said

Looks like alot of undertaking to get that SC rebuilt, but I guess between you and BigFish everything was a cinch.

Hey I was also watching some 4runner offroad actions on Youtube the other day and I stumbled upon some of your videos....cool man!

Nice work on the Supercharger job! Just a question...but couldn't you just clean the K&N and recharge it with more oil????

I just cleaned mine, and recharged it a couple of days ago.....

Thanks! It was a simple job, took a little while, but simple.

I already had once in January, cleaned that thing monthly and it wasn't enough.. dirt roads and oiled filters just dont get along.

With the O2 sensor, you have 234-9002, and the chart shows a 9001 for the v6 and the 9002 for the 2.4. Any diffrence between those two stock numbers?

Nicely done man. I don't hear any high pitched stuff going on with mine at all...just the lower growling sound.

I also noticed that the new nose cone doesn't have that tapped hole in the front next to the pulley drive. My nose cone has that hole, but it's empty. Is it simply for the bracket that holds the throttle cable and vacuum line?

Take a look at that list again. For 01-02s..

Thanks! Hope it helps you with yours..

As you can see in this pic, I have the old style Idler pulley Wilson was talking about. The nose cone I used to have before had a bolt hole like you mentioned. It went through that bracket that supports the nose cone and bolts to the body of the S/C. The new nose cone does not have that bolt hole, but the bracket is supported just fine by the other two..

Good to know! I currently live in an area with mostly paved roads....but in the future....I may just make the change!

Great work as usual man!

Rip, it was good to catch up and turn some wrenches with you again. As always the truck looks awesome, and I'm glad I could lend a hand in making your supercharger last another 100k, and squeezing out some more boost!

The Ripcord Runner is coming right along. Once you get your wideband we'll have to figure out this whole tuning thing.

Thanks again for the ski passes, that was very generous of you!

It was indeed a good time. Thanks again for the assistance!

I am loving this 2.2 pulley. Not a massive change, but I seem to have more power on the highway, which is always a good thing!

Enjoy those passes! I went up there today and the snow was awesome! I work next weekend (sat/sun), and i'm off monday for a free riding day! Let me know when you go up, I just might be there!
