Ripcord's 2002 4Runner Sport Ed.

Hey Ripcord. I just read through your info on preping for and installing your supercharger, which was a great reference. Im in the process of considering a sc right now, and just had a few questions for you. Before I ask, let me give you the condition of my runner and recent maintenance relative to installing a sc.

Oil changes every 5 to 6k with mobile 1 high mileage synthetic. Just changed the oil and filter two days ago. I always use OEM oil filters. Seafoam treatment in the tank about a year ago. I have zero oil or coolant leaks. Valve cover gaskets, timing belt, water pump replaced about 20k miles ago. Plugs replaced with Toyota recommended Denso's about 5k miles ago. Rear diff oil replaced with amsoil synthetic about 10k miles ago along with diff breather mod. Air filter and fuel filter replaced about than 5k miles ago. Tranny fluid flush about 5k miles ago. The only thing I feel I need to do for prep is a new radiator/external cooler for preventative purposes, which I will do soon.

So here are my questions.

Am I ready to bolt on a sc? Im not necessarily looking for the most possible power right now, just a substantial gain for practical purposes. So is the 7th injector NEEDED? I didnt realize they were almost $900! Did you happen to drive your 4runner enough to get a feel for it with the sc, before you installed the 7th infector? And if so how did it feel? My plan would be to eventually get the 7th infector, replace stock fuel injectors, and get an exhuast. But for now I guess my main question is, would I be ok just bolting on a sc?

I realize this a random post. But you seem like a great reference. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well it sounds like your truck is well maintained, curious as to how many miles it has, maybe i missed that part.

But to start on your questions, no you do not need a 7th. Those are really only needed for people at or near sea level. Something to do with the density of the air causing pinging. Im at 182k for miles. So its getting up there. Thats another thing I was wondering about. Would it be safe to sc an engine with that many miles? Thing is I wouldnt be driving it like a mad man. Just the opposite. I pamper my truck haha. But I would use it when I need the power. So for my application I wouldnt be stressing the seals that much more.

And then for elavation, Im in WY at over 6000 ft right now, but I actually live in Wisconsin at about 900 ft elevation. I didnt know the 7th injector was more useful at different elevations

Fog Light Mod - Other news.

First mod of the new year, although small, is the Fog Light Mod! I am home in ABQ for a few days, so I wanted to get this done.

The purpose of this modification is to be able to use the fog lights almost anytime you want! It always bugged me when I would turn on the brights and lose all foreground light, fog light mod fixes that. Also when I just want to look awesome cruising around at dusk with just parking lights and fogs, now I can do that too!

Here is a chart of when the fog lights are able to be used.

This mod was fairly strait forward, you just need to be careful as you would anytime you are diving into the main fuse block of the vehicle..

Not an update so much as just pictures..



Since I have been living in a ski town for a month, there are a few things I have had to go without... Mostly internet and car washes..

This is the type of roads I dealt with on a daily basis, thank God for multi-mode, duractracs, and block heaters!

Drove home yesterday, I managed to get 18.7 MPG on initial trip up there and 22.5mpg on the way back!
This is what a months worth of salty, snowy, muddy roads looks like. The undercarriage was way worse.

I broke a tail light when I accidentally clipped a tree offroad..

Spent most of the day detailing the 4runner. About 2 hours just in washing all that crap off.. The interior was pretty trashed too.

Cleaned the engine bay too. Still wet in the picture.

As far as any other updates, take a peak at the post I made a few weeks ago.

What a great looking rig kid! I am interested to see what it's going to look like with the smaller 265/70 tires, because the size you currently have looks wonderful and they fit the fender-wells perfectly IMO.

I live 10 minutes from the mountain. Im just home in ABQ for a few days.

I have been snowboarding 32 days so far this season, got a wicked goggle tan, haha!



On the tail light... That one big part that is missing on the back side is luckily all one big piece still. So I super glued that back in as temporary measure. Now it is just that little sliver of broken part on the corner. You can't tell its broken unless you are right up to it now.

I emailed a few vendors on ebay about getting just one light instead of the pair, still waiting for a response.. Give it a few days and I will call Eagle Eyes directly and ask them.

And I agree on the tires.. The 285s look so awesome and perfect, but I want some power and MPG's back too. Im still not completely sure I want to step down a size anyways..

I just checked the snow report for AF, looks like a 31" base as of today. How's the snow? Is there alot of crap poking through, or is the base pretty even?

I've only got 2 days in.. one @ the creek, and the other @ sandia. If I get 12 on the season I'll be a happy camper.

What BFAD said...He told me you broke your foot. And, I see crutches in the back of the Runner..Guess it hasn't slowed you down much if you are still Snow Boarding and doing mods to the Runner.

Most of those days have been just a few runs though. Being a snowboard instructor is tough to get my own runs in, at least my fundamentals and form is perfect now..

And its decent, the backside groomers are the best groomers. The frontside groomers are icy and exposed. A few of the blacks that are protected from the sun are still nice, but most are closed . The tree runs and glades are still amazing though! The terrain parks are better than usual too.

At least its still better than most of Colorado at this point, isn't that weird??

BTW, I'll be going to Santa Fe on Thursday if you are interested!!

Yeah I broke my right foot in October.. I broke two of the metatarsals (the bones that run from the toes to the ankle. I broke them right at the joint of the toes too, super painful!

I can walk in normal shoes again, but it still hurts like hell every time I put on my snowboard boots. Take a few pain pills everyday just for that. Luckily, snowboard boots are almost as supportive as medical boots, so once I'm in, I'm good!

And yeah I keep the crutches with me, after a day of boarding it can sometimes hurt to walk without them.

Those snow conditions sound about right, but like you said, it seems like this season the CO folks are looking a little green when they look south for once.

I wish I could make it on Thursday, but I've got a day shift... 530a to 530p. Take it easy up there man, it'll probably be pretty icy. I'm sure you can handle anything it throws at you, so do a run for me too!

dang man i guess it is the end of the world this year... Our mountains have nothing worth spending $70 for a day of riding. I'm so jealous, do you guys usually get a good amount of snow there?

Usually we do very well with snow, just becuase our state has mexico in the title does not mean we are a desert.. Northen NM is very similar to Colorado.

This year has been a bad one for us too, can't imagine how much you guys are hurting..
