rkntoy's Really Slow Dual Case Install

It begins...

Thought I would start a thread to track putting together my dual t-case with triple shifters. I have gotten info from a bunch of different threads but will try to keep all my steps in this thread. Just don't expect me to get it done quickly as the startup I work for is starting to take off. My goal - get it wrapped and trail tested in time for Colorado Toyota Jamboree.

In parts accumulation mode now.

Thanks to Trail-Gear for starting things off with helpful phone calls and fast shipping.

But...using the time to keep accumulating parts.

Enter the URD short-shift kit and my triple-stick shifter setup from RADesigns. Going to get my drivelines lengthened/shortened in advance too - picked up some spares.

Rory at RADesigns is most excellent to work with.

Index finger, right hand on a obvious set of working hands. That is going to hurt for a while. That is the one finger that touches everything. Nice build, I love the duel case but dont have the need to justify it myself.

Care to explain?!

Yup - breaking all safety procedures I was holding a stud aligned with the base plate with my right hand and using my framing gun with my left. Framing gun obviously pointed at my right hand.

Well, double shots happen - especially when I use my non-dominant hand. First nail - right where I wanted it. Second one - not so much. Off to the ER with a 3" galvanized framing nail in my finger. Thought for a moment about grabbing wise-grips but thought for sure I had gotten the bone. In the end, I just glanced the nail off the very tip.

Can't feel the tip of the finger any more - hopefully some will come back.

OK - feeling is finally coming back a little bit so hauling the drivelines in for modification.

Before I start is there any specific steps that people want documented while I do it?

Going to be following the Trail-Gear install guides for installing the 4.7 gearset (http://www.trail-gear.com/PDF/105000-1-INS.pdf) and Taco adapter (http://www.trail-gear.com/PDF/304091-1-INS.pdf). The guides are sure a lot more complete than the first time I installed a dual case setup.

URD Short Shifter Install

First step to free up some shifter space. Did not turn out like I thought it would and now understand why EatonKyleH cut and re-welded his shifters so much.

Only short shifter option for the W59 I could find was URD. The instructions were pretty good so I will just post up some things that did not align with the instructions - along with before and after pics.

First hiccup was #7 - where is says place the thicker section of the spacer to the rear. Looking at it all dimensions looked the same front and back. Broke out the calipers - all the same front and back. So I just put it on.

Next issue - the front shifter mount holes are under the front edge of the opening and you can't fit the long allen bolt in. You also have to torque them so I had to make some space.

All done - after pics.

The angle in the forward position does not show well. Ended up cutting a bit over 2" off the throw. All came off the forward motion which I was not expecting. Sooooo - looks like cutting and bending is in my shifter's future.

Good to know...

I am in the process of installing an Inchworm dual case and have the same short shifter kit. This info is helpful. I hope to have the dual case installed this weekend, then wait for drive shafts to be reworked.

Thanks for the informative posts

You are way ahead of me.

I am wondering how hard it would be to heat and bend versus cut and weld.

I have to say the Trail Gear skid plate is dang beefy and a pretty good value if you shop around a bit.
