RL's Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Review

I don't know, just seems like an unnecessary additional expense. [/B]

It would save me the cost of a tire but thats not big deal . I don't rotate my spare. I still got 48k on my Revos and probably could run them another 5k in summer and not going off road at all. Then they would be cooked. They have wore perfect , so I'm ok with that.

All the tires I'm looking at are all in the ballpark of the same price range , so just got to pick the right one.

Thanks. Here are more pictures from when I first got the tires. Nothing new to report on them since I didn

Are those 265/70/17 ?

Any clearance issues ???

I think GasGuzzler has the SA's in the stock size 265/65/R17's....but correct me if I'm wrong.

Still looks a lot tougher than the Dunlops even though they are the same size.

Got my SA's installed today

My SA's arrived (P265/70/16) and were installed today. They balanced very well and my initial impression on road is that they are no louder than the stock Duelers and they ride very comfortably on regular roads and had them up to 75 on the highway. I'll get them off road in the next few days to test them more.

Cool, keep us posted. I'm having a set of 265/70/R17's Revo's put on tomorrow and will be heading up to your neck of the woods (Summit County) to go camping and wheel'n.

I got mine 3 days ago - went ahead and got all 5 so I'll be sure to rotate the spare in. I upgraded from stock Dunlops to these in 265/70/17 P rated 113T. First impressions were not good. Nice and quite and smooth ride but the ride was squirly and it seemed to drift erratically when the pavement was uneven making it feel unstable. I was starting to stress over my apparent mistake.

I did some searching online and read that tires need to break in a bit due to some coating they put on them? Not sure about that but figured I'd give them a couple more days and check the pressure. Pressure was high on some tires and not consistent so they're all at 33 now. That got rid of the odd drifting and most of the squirlyness.

They still feel a little less stable at highway speeds. The rear-end has a slight loose feel with them. I'm not sure if it's the extra size and extra side wall, the fact that I changed to AT tires, or that they still need to break in. They do seem to be getting better but maybe I'm just getting used to them.

Anyway I like them now. Smooth, quite, very good handling on corners at 40mph and less - still waiting to see if highway firms up. on dirt and gravel they behave nicely giving a more sure grip and handling rough hard bumps nicer than the Dunlops - Dunlops still win on DRY pavement only. They don't seem to pick up gravel too much which was a concern for me having a partial gravel driveway. I read somewhere that Revos tend to really suck up gravel and fling it. As for looks, I'm liking them more. The extra size was odd at first in the front since I don't have a lift. The tires themselves look great, I got them black side out. I'll probably post pics at some point.

No rubbing issues - I have between .5 and .75 space between the rear mud flap with the wheels turned. More clearance than that in the front.

That's my experience anyway.

rdrunner, those were some of my first impressions when I had my stock Dunlops replaced with 265/70/R17's today.

I think you highlighted some of the main differences. Going up in size almost always means more sidewall flex and less cornering stability, and the fact that we went from an HT tire to an AT tire also affects on-road, dry weather handling. I need to drive on my tires some more to get a better feel for them...

Don't worry guy's , you made a major tire change , you will get used to it and never want to go back.

As far as on dry pavement vs the Donlops , these will better when you get used to them.

Anytire with wider lugs have will naturally pick up bigger stones instead of pebbles.

You will find these tire far superior in all area's than what your used to.

I have always run mine much higher in pressure , to me they still ride nice , wore great , ect..... play with the pressure until you find what you like and works best for your driving.

I like them, it was just a shock initially. I think having the tires at different pressures was the biggest problem. The truck felt like it had a mind of its own at times and I kept thinking "what the...!"

Thanks for the comments. I plan on switching over to GY SA in a few weeks after shadowing the whole "what tire to get X or GY SA. With last year's snow (120 inches) I am tired of my flops flopping. :bash:

Did you go through the web, Discount Tire or a local shop? For 4 in stock size , Tire Rack with a local install in S. Portland is $720. Discount Tire drop shipping to me is $680 + install/disposal costs.

Thank btw to Falls, your knowledge and experience has helped alot !

Sears ended up being the best price for everything I had going since they had a sale going on. They were cheaper on alignment and some of the other little stuff. In the end they took forever to do it and I sort of wished I had gone to my regular tire place but whatever. I'm sure they'll have another big sale before Fall is done but the rebate may be gone by then. Kudos to them for getting the balancing perfect the first time though the tire pressure was all over the place.

No problem my friend. One thing about the severe weather rated tires I like is that we were just buried multiple times last year . Most snow in many many years. I got through with the Revos easy on road , got stuck 2x off road , but it was snow and ice rut combo , probably nothing would have helped at that point.

Has anyone tried the 265/70 GY SA's with the C load rating? I see they have some extra tread depth and some extra weight. As subjective as it is I am wondering how bad they ride. I have gone from P to E and I'd expect less of a ride penalty than that.

Thanks.

You went from a P to an E ?? what tire ??

Is the E to harsh ? or what are you wondering ?? The C would def. be softer than the E 6 ply vs 10 ply.

I don't know but I think most run are P rated GY SA that people have here. I would like to hear about the C rated ride also.

Tread depth on the GY SA (P) is 14/32 and on the LT's are 16/32. Most other P rated AT tires that I have looked into have a depth of 13/32.

So what do you do next time you get new tires with an old tire as a spare assuming you got Revos yet again? I'm guessing that's why Toyota recommends rotating the spare.

Yes the manual recommends rotating the spare , but 3 different dealers that have rotated my tires have not done that. Just did front to back rotation . Tires lasted me just fine , I use my spare for just that a spare. I do check it and check pressures and tire inspection regularly .

I know about rotating the spare but choose not to , never ever did.

I guess when the dealer rotates my tires they should look at the manual. I always watch them do the stuff and see many things that they don't check that they should , so I have to give them a good talking to.......lol.

I've done P to E and P to D on several (4) half ton trucks. The E's ride is ok. I had E's (Geolander ATII's) on my old Trooper, rode stiffer but was very tolerable. Some would say it was too stiff. They're great if you tow because you can inflate them enough to really stiffen the sidewalls and provide great stability. Troopers are pretty soft to begin with. A Ski-Nautique and some wind was scary in the Trooper until the Geolanders. Rear tires at 55psi fronts at 42-45 and it towed like a dream, ok maybe not a great dream:D

I think some C tires on a T4R might be the right balance of everything.
