"Roach" build thread

kicked it into 4wd today in a snowy patch. turned way too tight and bound up a CV. All four boots are torn....

Kevin, you got any ADD axles around?

waiting for a little less snow to hit the junkyard again and look for the hubs.

Also goin for a 2" spacer lift for now.

All the ADD stuff is in the axle tube, and I don't have any of that. But your CV shafts are the same as mine and I've got several, and I've still got the Aisin hubs and non-ADD axle tube kicking around too.

Yeah I meant just the cv shafts... Ive actually never looked at them in depth, just that every. single. boot. is ripped. And it has been like that since I bought it.

What I meant to ask earlier was, I was in snow just crawling at 2mph and I had to make a turn full-lock (still in 4wd) and ended up on pavement. passenger tire locked up and my cv clicked and it killed the engine... haven't had much experience with actually using 4wd. dafuq did I just do?

I just may hit the junkyard tomorrow in search of any manual hubs otherwise I'll have to hit you up for those and the cv's.

Also I was going to build sliders but it was cold as balls and a 57 Chevy was blocking the tube bender.

I never type what I mean the first time, it's a failing. I need to learn to use preview.

Yeah, you bound the CV - if you'd been in low range it might have broken, but your motor wasn't strong enough to bust it so it choked instead. When you wheel IFS much you'll get to learn what that rubberband feeling means and when to back off or not crank the wheel so hard.

I have one practically new NAPA CV, two more OEM axles that are in fine shape, and one more that the boot came off but I caught it right away so it should just need the tulip cleaned and regreased and the boot clamped on again. I'll make you a package deal with the hubs and throw in a set of axle stubs just cuz you're cool? I need this stuff gone! :lmao:

lol alright. my luck is probably nonexistent anyway... certain people seem to strip any good parts off the cars there and sell them to feed their families. Bas****s.
 
Fella who worked at one of the yards told me his coworkers were paid under the table by a company to let them know any time a new import (especially Yota trucks) hit the yard - they'd come yank everything valuable and it goes south of the border. I don't know how true it is, but considering how quick these trucks get stripped down (and how much lack of regard whoever is doing it shows to the trim and other less valuable stuff), I believe it.
 
I definitely believe it. Some of those guys were ****s when I touched "their" truck.

I guess I'll take you up on that though.
 
Did a little bit of visual stuff. installed my LEDs. Disappointed because there's still more now that I see will require replacement. VERY happy with the map/dome lights though. Keep in mind these pics are taken at night with my phone that does NOT meter anything darker than daylight. VERY bright. superbrightleds ftw.

Yay my dash just cracked in another spot. Time to get a dash cover. :/

Also, does anyone know if the corner pieces on the rear bumper are that hard to get off? I have an idea I'd like to look into some more.
 
OK. the dimmer switch still works, yes. However, the map lights are either on or off now. No dim lights when you open the door, but that's a good thing. They surprised the hell out of me earlier.

To do what I did, there's two 3022 bulbs in the map light. It's confusing to remove at first but you just pry between the headliner and each corner. The center dome is also a 3022. The rear dome is a 3022 as well, but you have to bend the prongs in a bit because it's just a bit too long.

License plate lights are 194, I bought the 3-led 120* angle ones. There's only two back there.

For the gauges and dash, well I'm not done actually. The red isn't quite as bright as I'd hoped, but I'm looking for maybe another option. the four gauges on the side are actually still lit up white. The cluster takes three 194's for the back lighting. There's one more just below the far right one and I've figured it out to be the low fuel light. Don't replace that with an LED. It lights up when the ignition is on. The tiny bulbs are 74.

BTW for that matter, the center HVAC bulb is a 74, but the circuit board is just a bit too wide. ground off a bit and it fit. I need to replace a couple in the gauge cluster still so I have to take it all apart again. And yes, most of the dash has to come apart.
 
replaced my back up light switch and clutch/brake pedal rubbers. Yup, that was worthy of a build thread update :P

Replacing the rear diff U-joint probably tomorrow. If it ends up getting warm enough, I just may try out my buffer.

OH yeah, and I traced my oil leak to the valve cover gasket, driver's side (fortunately). fail. Seriously, wtf. they do go bad that fast on these don't they?? (hey, but that means that when I pulled off the rear main seal and just bolted it back on, it was still ok. success :))
 
more interesting of an update... I pulled the magnaflow stainless exhaust off of my focus, and made it work on my 4runner. Sounds great, and I feel a nice little improvement. No drone, just a nice growl.

So I did a few tests the other day, trying to figure out a slight miss that I have. Since I never did a compression test on it, I was shocked to see 150psi on every single cylinder, and especially at my altitude. Not to mention the 17" vacuum it's pulling. Also pulled 45psi on the engine-running compression test and 120 at WOT for a second, which means the cams are good too. $100 engine for the win.

Oh, and the problem? my cap and rotor are starting to go. I can start to see shiny bits on the inside of the cap indicating the production of ozone... and that means an excessive gap between the contacts.

Also in a little more than a month I get to tow my project car. yay. lol.
