"Roach" build thread

To be honest I was thinking about using sch. 40 pipe. 1-1/4" pipe has .140 wall thickness and 1.66" O.D. just slightly under their sizes. I checked out some pipe yesterday at the hardware store and 1-1/4" I.D. seemed to look about the right size.

We'll see how it goes. I just want to practice if nothing else.

I read "sch 40" and my brain said, "Why does he want to use PVC"? Too early in the morning.
 
I didn't realize that was more popular and steel pipe is harder to find. Either way, I found a decent (read: good enough) place to buy pipe that's 5 minutes away from home vs getting on the freeway for 30 minutes.

it's called black iron pipe. It's not iron though, it's just carbon steel painted black. fail. but in a good way.

hey $20 for a pipe bender and $20 for 10ft of tube is...well, good enough. I think I'll have to get some square tube though as well.
 
How much of a hassle is the Plasti-Dip on the rims? I want to do that, but There's alot of prep that has to go into the rims before painting.
 
not much hassle at all. when I did these wheels, they were on the car. I just ran over to the carwash and sprayed the whole thing down. Got back and dried it off. Taped off the sidewall and lugnuts and started spraying very light coats. I only waited under a minute per coat...that's how light it was. Immediately after I finished a wheel, I would carefully peel off the tape. If you let the dip dry, the tape peels it off.

It's a lot easier to pull a wheel and do it that way since you don't need to tape the lugnuts. dries quickly. Took me 1 and a half cans and about 30 minutes to spray all four total. when I was done, it started to rain.

You're making me nervous with this. A pair of HREW sliders are $160 at 4xInnovations, and you know those will hold up - what is this black iron pipe stuff, and how well will it take a weld or hold up when it gets between a rock and your 4000 pound truck?

There's a big difference between pipe and tube. In general, if it's called pipe it's not designed to be structural.
 
There's also structural pipe.

I don't know why they call it that... all it is, is carbon steel pipe that has formed a black scale layer during manufacturing. Very weldable assuming you clean the metal properly. I was thinking of using the 1-1/4" pipe size because outside diameter is 1.66" and wall thickness is .140". It's just ERW in pipe dimensions and (unfortunately) with threaded ends that I'll have to cut off. I'm trying to see if the local pipe is a53 or a500 spec. Either one is good for structural use and it is also seamless.
 
How is the plastidip holding up on your wheels? I have the same ones on my 94 and I cat decide between plastidip and spray paint. Also what are the blue lines running to your spark plugs and where did you get them? I saw a video the other day of a 94 with all his vacuum lines like that. My friend told me that they last longer than normal hoses, but I cant remember the name he told me.

Yes what Kevin said, silicone hoses. The blue wires on my car actually aren't those silicone hoses though. They are NGK plug wires, and they just make them in that color.

The dip has held up well... the only issue is where I rebalance my tires or scrape on rock. then it comes off. (I coat my tire weights) other than that they're fine. All you have to do anyway is clean and recoat it. Spray paint sucks.
 
Hmm I still want more high. probably another 2" out of, say, an OME kit when I pick up my productivity at work and start making $30/hr. (and pay off my small student loan.) Follow that with some 33x12.50R15's and soft 8's... should add another 1.5" for 5.5" total lift. haha.

True but I don't expect much if anything...

so it took me about 6 hours to do the body lift by myself without instructions. not sure if that's good or bad. had to modify the front bumper to fit too. And the shifter plate.
