Rock Lights?

I'm curious what you think of rock lights. I know some people use them just for show (and that's cool if that's your thing), but I'm more interested in their usefulness. For those of you that have them, are they helpful on the trail or at camp? Would you do it again? Any recommendations on specific lights? Where did you mount them? I'm thinking that white or amber would be my choice, but do the RGB lights have any benefit?

Also interested... I'm sure I'm the odd one out but I would love some 4,000k 90 cri emitters. All the slow quality light stuff is really driving me nuts.

I wouldn't mind making my own if that was possible.

Do you do much wheeling at night? We used to do night runs all the time, leave the wives and kids back at base camp, guys go get stupid. But to answer, yes they did come in handy, in times of getting stuck, or for extra light doing a trail fix.

Was planning to do some on my current rig. Hobo Freight sells some now, cheap enough that I might give them a try.

I will eventually put "rock lights" on the 4runner. I had them on my old rig, and they were very useful. They were used for spotting a handful of times. They were used to light up the undercarriage to diagnose and fix things after dark many more times. For some reason I tended to do more damage night wheeling, so it was nice to have the lights to try and fix it.

I have 6 rigid rock lights, I can take pics of how I mounted them when I get home. There are pics in my build thread somewhere..

I occasionally drive in to base camp at night after work. Most times I don't worry, a couple times rock lights would have been useful. In summer I leave camp after dinner to go rock climbing when the temps become cooler. Same thing, most times I'm fine, there have been maybe a handful of times I think rock lights would have helped make things easier.

On a side note I can say I have flat circular leds under my hood... seems silly I know. But on a night trip when rock lights would have been useful my front end came down on a boulder and knocked some thing in the engine loose causing a rough idle. Popped hood threw the underhood lights on and it made looking for problem and fixing it easy. I probably wouldn't have been in that situation if I had rock lights and saw obstacles better...

I have ridden in my friends Taco with rock lights as well. Navigating seemed way easier. As a co pilot it was easy to lean out the window of my seat and see things to direct his passenger side line choices.

For me this is all over the past 5 yrs. So like you I'm questioning if I'm at a point where I need em. I'm personally leaning to yes for myself and would also go with white or amber...rgb ain't my thing.
