Just a thought...Slee makes a slider/step that's strong enough to bash some boulders.

My vote is for sliders too. My truck came with factory running boards, the only protection they offer offroad is to making screeching sounds when they go over a rock. I bent my running boards and they sort of saved my rocker panels by giving warning sound, so I had time to stop. I plan to replace running boards with good sliders but still couldn't break my stock running boards and justify expense for my wife : ) I don't do hardcore offroad though.

+1 for it depends on what you intend to use it for ...

FWIW... I have rock sliders and like the added protection of the kick-out.
