Rock Sliders - Tucked in look? Pics Please

Respectfully disagree....

The problem with having bars that stick really far out is the leverage they create. Yes, that can be overcome by reinforcing the frame (as one should do anyway)...but IMO, the more they stick out.....the more likely you are to hang up on them.


I always build mine tucked in pretty tight.....yes, you have to be more careful and IMO, full width axles help keep the body out of the rocks more....which is why this project will be getting 67" WMF to WMF axles eventually.

Here's a pic of my sliders....two tubes, 5 legs to the frame...you can hardly tell they're there.

I get it but to me the whole purpose of sliders is to avoid body damage, they are in essence bumpers for your rockers/doors IMO.
Not everybody is gonna go full width axles. Even with full width axles you can still drop down on a rock/ledge and do damage.

Heck I got pulled over in my 94 with in a month of doing the SAS on my 94 for having the tires sticking out 1.5" from the fenders. in my area you have to have all of the tread covered. Any my wife like having them as a sort of step to crawl up into the truck

I apologize for not getting back to you. Apparently, the forum software now has a bug that's linking my account to another lowercase sean k (not sure if he's got spaces in there or not) and I'm not getting anything but his notifications and can't search via my user name.

In any case, ya, I get that not everyone will go full width....in AZ, it's legal to have the tires stick all the way out, we can register home built buggies and UTVs can legally drive down the road, just as God intended it.

I just think line selection is a little more difficult with the tighter sliders.....but the advantage is that you're not hitting them as often or getting hung up on them....and I've seen that happen a lot too. It's just like people who narrow up Jeep bodies by cutting 6" out of the middle and welding them back together, boatsides, or how narrower bodied rigs can fit down tighter trails and get hung up less. Same premise. Making the body 4" wider on each side, to me, isn't worth the trade off. To others, it is. Whatever floats your boat....but the OP was specifically asking about more tucked in bars....not less.

understood, i was just offering my experience with the sliders being out a little bit more providing protection that worked for me.

No worries....I get where you're coming from. Plenty of ways to skin that cat and personal preference probably comes into play more than anything.

Thanks on the 4Runner....it's not anywhere near done.

I've got a set of dual Marlins going in, a Tundra rear axle, a 4" wider than stock FJ80 front axle, and 37 PBRs with a 3 and 4 links going in eventually....stretching the wheelbase out to 114-117" and hoping to keep the frame height at 20"....but 22" is more realistic.

do you have anymore pics of your sliders and roof rack? closer and how they are attached? whats it look like between the rocker panel and the frame rails?
