Rock Toy Industries 3rd gen 3.4 Turbo Build

So just for clarification with the first video . . . both are 2nd gen pickups and the one with the camera is 3.4 supercharged, while the the truck on the left that pulls ahead is 3.4 with the turbo, correct?

I have been waiting and hoping for the past few years noq that someone would produce a high quality, relatively complete turbo kit for the 3.4. If you do end up producing it I will get one at some point. Down the road after an engine and axle rebuild

I mean... a 2JZ has TWO turbos... lol.

This is awesome, can't wait to see more on it. I vote for a ridiculous blow off valve.... something like an HKS SSQV. It needs to scare small children :bat:

The camera truck is a 2nd gen 4runner with a 3.4 and a supercharger. The turbo truck is the white one. I think the 4runner did a 17 flat while the turbo truck was 15.2 on that 1/4 mile. Keep in mind, this is at Denver elevation.

Well it all starts tomorrow.

All the parts are in hand and we just finalized a 2nd gen 4runner 2 door 3.4 swap so the shop is now open.

Last round of parts ordering brought in

Aisin timing belt/water pump kit
Toyota OEM valve cover gaskets
New rear main seal
New crank seal
3 inch exhaust pipe assortment
Borla XR-1 muffler
V band flanges and clamps

Tomorrow morning starts with tearing down the front of the truck for intercooler mockup and then pulling the motor.

Should be posting updates as we go along on the facebook page

:reddance:

Turbo has spin-up time, though, from what I've read, whereas supercharger gives your power boost immediately.

Depends. Roots and twin screws provide instant boost with the application of throttle. Centrifugal blowers require engine RPM to make power.

Few pics from today. Didn't get started until about 3pm so today was a short day

Lined it with door edge molding to prevent chaffing. Nobody likes chaffing.

We pulled the coilovers so we can raise and lower it with the lift so its easier to work on. Got rake? :D

Thats all for now. Back at it bright and early tomorrow!

Thread Bump

All day to cut a core support - At this rate, it might be done April (2015) :gossip:

Just kidding - Looking forward to seeing this project. Let us know what parts and from who you sourced them from.

Lookin good. How much for a manifold and downpipe setup? Also how are you limiting the wastegate to that psi? Just a different actuator?

It lives.

There is still a bunch of stuff to do. Need to run the charge pipe, BOV, air filter, and fab up the exhaust.

Few things to mention. We were not able to reuse the factory airbox as it was too much of a tight fit and the box just wasn't going match up with the turbo inlet. For now, we are going to run a cone filter but we are planning to switch it to a inline filter and plumb it so it pulls the air from the fender just like factory.

We did not cut any fenders or the firewall. Only the hole in the core support was opened up so the intercooler piping could be run. Some of the AC lines needed to be persuaded to fit.

As of now, this isn't a simple bolt on kit. We want to try and get it a bit simpler and try to release a kit but this is a lot of work to build and install it. Feelers are out for the manifold fabrication as this one was built all in house from scratch which was very time consuming. Getting the flanges laser cut and the tubes bent will be key for releasing the kit.

Here are a few pictures

I will be bringing my DSLR to work tomorrow so we will have some nicer quality pictures soon. Hope to have it all wrapped up by the end of the week.

Man thats cool, even if it never sees the light of day as a kit. Very cool.

Thanks Nate! I really want to get a reasonable kit produced but it all depends on how crazy the cost will be to get the manifolds and charge pipes made. If it happens, its going to be USA made and sourced.

Even if we don't get a bolt on kit up for sale, i would like to offer it available for people to drop the truck off with us for the install.

Well ya know. If you wanted another test vehicle. I could probably be persuaded to let you borrow my truck. :D

Good work guys. Curious to see how you like the holset. Should spool pretty nicely under load.

Just curious, why is the compressor outlet pointed at the wheel well? Just haven't reclocked it yet?

I don't think the turbo was bolted down or fully seated in that picture so it wasn't lined up quite right. The outlet points straight down and has a 90 degree elbow which sends it straight forward to the IC.
