Rock Toy Industries 3rd gen 3.4 Turbo Build

Well its running and driving. We took it out for the first test this evening and this thing is crazy fast. The wastegate needs to be turned down a bit since it will hit about 12psi and throw you back in the seat. The fuel map loaded on the URD computer hasn't been tuned for that much boost yet so it needs a good tuning session.

We didn't get any pictures of the completed setup just yet but that will come tomorrow. In the mean time, here are a few more pictures of it in progress and a couple videos of the first drive

Love it love it. Holset is a beast. Guys here running holsets on his DSM, auto, 35+ psi and a little 50 shot to get her to spool up. Taking 800+whp GTR's like they are nothing. The turbo can run 50psi and never break!!!

Yep it was built to push 40psi through a cummins all day long and I will be nowhere near that . It is a little on the slow side to spool but its not really bad. Since this is a decent sized V6, it has enough low end torque to get you going and then it takes off at about 2500rpm

Yep it was built to push 40psi through a cummins all day long and I will be nowhere near that . It is a little on the slow side to spool but its not really bad. Since this is a decent sized V6, it has enough low end torque to get you going and then it takes off at about 2500rpm

Yea on our 2.0L's you dont really get going till 4500rpms. And with the auto trans it really has issues off the line. But the 50 shot really helped all that. He actually exploded a very expensive intake mani from a nitrous burp but usually does pretty good.

I keep seeing the turbo truck out and about, maybe I'll start seeing the Lobster again. I'd love to have a set up like this, then have my buddy Harvey(The Boost Creep) tune it for some E85.

Does having a little lag that comes with a turbo help a stock transmission last longer versus a Supercharger making linear boost straight off of idle? Just trying to get a feel for whether or not a turbo setup ran "spiritedly" will lead to needing to upgrade the Transmission like a 7th injector SC setup seems to.

Yeah i drove it home tonight and its definitely got some lag but the ecu hasn't quite figured out the fuel parameters yet and i'm still a little leaner than i want to be in the lower revs according to the wideband. It should be closer to where i want it after a week of driving and some time adjusting the fuel map.

Still running the stock MAF. Its right after the Intercooler and before the throttle body. I really need to get it out and take pictures of everything. That might be a goal for tomorrow.

For sure! The Lobster has been in the shop since Sunday so i've been dailying my POS lower Jetta.

I'm not too sure on that but i could see it being true. Once boost hits, the torque converter has already locked up and since you are already moving, its not as much of a hit on the trans. This 4Runner as well as the other Turbo Truck we have are both manuals so i can't really speak much on it. Definitely makes sense to me though

Going to keep an eye on it but it shouldn't be seeing much boost on the trail. This truck already has a 170 degree thermostat and i can view the actual coolant temp on the UltraGauge instead of whatever the stock gauges decides it wants to say. Good point though and we will be watching it for sure.

Will do! I think we are going to do another shop rig and then start offering it to customers. I want to iron out a few more things on the next build so its an easier to install setup which should mean less cost. Plus i also want to make sure no issues arise in the long term before we offer it to the public.

I would probably be more inclined to buy manifolds and other 4runner specific parts as well.

Well thought out kits are great, but inevitably, people will want to take a turbo build their own direction. Different turbo, more/less lag, more or less boost etc.

Awesome build though. I'm really excited to see dyno curves compared to the SC crowd. And how it behaves on a trail.

Ok so my question now is I am taking it no wincH and what are your plans for a bumper. Looks like a tight fit so that is what I am interested in seeing. Moab needs to come a lot quicker this year.
