Rocky road outfitters roof rack

So I just installed the Rocky Road Adventure rack on my SR5, wasn't too bad maybe just over an hour and I did it alone. I think the secret is to take the entire stock rack off instead of fighting to slide it on like some have talked about. I just removed eveything and worked from the ground. (Sorry not a lot of pictures...I wanted you to use your imagination.) I accidentally threw away the instructions so I winged it.

Here are the two rails upright after removing the stock crossbars on the ground with Yakima PowderHounds attached)

Then I pre-threaded the attachement pieces and slide them on either rail.

From there I put the rack into the brackets and did a finger tighten on the bolts so the rack didn't fall out and kill me. After I threw it up on the roof I did a test fit and since the bolts holding the rack were loose I was able to get the 4 connection points to fit back on the car. (Might take some loosening of the rack bolts as well. The rack is square the roof is not.)

Then I tightened everything down...maybe too much!

Looks like I will need to go find a replacement and do some bolt extraction...YAY!!! :bash:

So it's on and done. Seeing how I don't have a garage and had to do this in the street I think taking the whole thing off saved some time and embarrassment from climbing on the car or a ladder...alone.

FYI for anyone who is using the thread about how to remove the rack, he shows a picture of the front plastic cover with only two snaps...the back has four. I couldn't figure out why it wasn't coming off.

Kudos to anyone that has done the install alone, I had a friend help me and it went relatively smoothly, just slid the back connections in, pulled the rack all the way forward, then backed the other two in from the front. Very easy, but definitely took 2 people. It may have also taken some motivation with a rubber mallet to get it exactly where I needed it.

Mounting a Hi-Lift Jack to a Rocky Road

I ordered a Rocky Road for my 2012 SR5. It came pretty quickly, but half the hardware needed to mount it to the car wasn't included. Neither was the spare wheel mounting hardware, but frankly, I could live without that. Rocky Road says they will send out the missing pieces. So far in my email dealings with them, no one has even signed a name to any correspondence, much less apologized for the goof. Whatever.

I am wondering how the high lift jack mounting brackets work. Has anyone on this board used the brackets for mounting a hi-lift jack? I sure could use a picture or two. It seems like maybe there's some hardware missing here, too.

Here is a picture of the brackets I received. It's obvious they're meant to sit on top of the longitudinal members of the rack, but there doesn't appear to be any way of affixing them to the rack. Any clues would be really appreciated.

I never had a hi-lift on my RRO rack when it was still on my truck but it looks like you're missing the u-bolts necessary to attach the brackets to the longitudinal rack tubes. There are a few pictures on the RRO webpage for the 5th Gen roof rack that will give you an idea of how the brackets should be installed.

Just got mine last night, thought I'd resurrect this thread to see how people like them long term and get some install advice.

Everyone still happy with the rack?

For anyone that removed the rack entirely and then assembled on the ground, when you reinstalled the factory mounts did you apply/reapply any silicone for a seal?

I have and wouldn't recommend just using that rack. First off you may have clearance issues between the rack and the roof. There's a good chance of the box making contact with the roof. Also I have found that depending on the size of the box and the adjustability of it you will probably find that it sits too far back on the roof preventing the tailgate from opening all the way. What I ended up doing was ordering two of their 4-light bars without any tabs on them. This will get the box up a little higher and you can mount them on an angle which allows you to move the box forward.

I'll try and get some pics tomorrow. The box is a yakima skybox 16. In the meantime go to their site and look at their light bar. I have one mounted just like they do across the front and a second that goes across the back. Rather then mounting them straight up like they do, I just angle them toward the front a little. I then mount the box to those two bars.

Here are some pics. You'll notice that the bar in the back is tilted toward the rear of the vehicle. When the box is on it's tilted toward the front.

Thanks, I take it that the box clears the rear hatch when you open it? Also, there looks like some vertical lines or bars on 1/2 of the rear crossbar. Is that part of your setup?

I usually eyeball the angle on the light bars prior to putting the box on. 9 times out of 10 it just barely clears the tailgate. 1 time out of 10 I'm too lazy to fix it. I haven't replaced my lift gate struts yet and they get pretty lazy in the cold so if the spoiler touches the box there isn't much pressure.

I honestly don't really remember what it sounded like without the rack. I personally don't think it makes much noise unless the wind is really screaming. You could always take the light bars off when not in use or wrap the leading bar with a bungee cord which will cut down any noise. I used that technique on yakima bars in the past.

Another attempt at reviving this thread- how are these racks maintaining? Given the time some current owners have had with these racks, are there any regrets or suggestions to save the estimated $300 and use it towards some of the heavier hitters, i.e. Gobi, ARB, ETC?

I had a nice Gobi set up with my '05 T4R, which I recently sold, and the Gobi was pretty solid, met all my camping, fishing, hunting, kayaking needs! But I'm at a point with my 2011 where I NEED something besides the factory rack, so I am hoping for some more feedback on these Rocky Roads.....words of wisdom?? :thanks:
