Rocky Road Sliders Install?

Hey everyone.

I am new here, just been lurking for a while being amazed at all the mods from everyone. I decided to get the 4runner trail to go off roading a bit as well as take it to different places for some great landscapes. Well to my question. I just received my Rocky Road sliders today and installed them. The thing is I only have 5 threaded holes. The middle column bottom hole isn't threaded so I dont have a bolt there right now. I noticed in pictures that people do in fact have a bolt there and I was wondering if its normal to have an unthreaded spot? Sorry if this is a newb question, I have tried the search function for the answer, but it seems like its not an issue.

hmmmmm....what year TE?

I would say it is an issue, because you are not using 16.6 % of the strength engineered into it...not good IMHO.

Is there a chance you used the wrong set of holes?...and is this only on one side, or both?

I've read somewhere here of guys making it work with some sort of insert, or possibly a nutsert.

Someone else chime in?
 
I doubt this is your issue.... but....the directions on my RR sliders (SR5) were wrong/opposite. They indicated putting one end forward vs the other, 2 of the 3 plates would line up but the 3rd was off by a inch or so. As soon as I swapped sides everything lined up 100% dead on perfect. Their directions stated "The mounting leg that is closest to the end of the rockrail will indicate the front." On my sliders it was the opposite. You might want to double check if all else fails.
 
I have a 2011 TE. The bolts do not have threads on both sides, which seems like it is about right. On the instructions it says that the shorter side should be facing forward, which I did. The mounts line up perfect, there is a hole for the sixth bolt, it just isn't threaded. I can check the holes, but I have two mounts in the back, and the shorter mount in the front. I might have to get some insert or nut, maybe I will contact Rocky Road. I just wanted to see if this is a common problem.

Thanks for the tip, mine should arrive friday or monday, so knowing that in advance could save a lot of frustration (I'll probably try it the recommended way first.

I have had some interesting times with these sliders, but that's the subject for another post once they get here and installed!
 
The RR sliders only fit on one way, and one of my '11 TE's frame holes also had no threading.

I would not worry about it, but you can also get these nuts with tabs to hold them in place, and bolt it down on that if you're really concerned about it. I'm not - I can jack up one half of the TE on my sliders, no issues, other than you're not supposed to do that (you know, that one wheel at a time safe-ty thing people keep harping about), and they do flex a tad, but they do that with or without that bolt.
 
Thanks guys, it looks like I am not the only one that only has 5 threaded holes. I will look into the the link you place up offroading. I would also want to atleast have the intended 6 points of contact. Should help a lot for upward force, but isn't as big of a deal with downward force.

Can someone take a picture of their middle mounting bracket on the Rocky Road sliders. I have mine on and both the driver and passenger side middle bracket do not have holes lined up for bolts. I have the closer to the end mount bracket located at the front and the two back mounting brackets located toward the rear of the truck. It looks like the middle bracket is welded backwards because there are holes on the opposite side of the middle mount bracket. Thanks
 
For those who have installed on to a Trd pro, how much of a clearance issue did you encounter on the front end? When I line up the holes, the slider really pushes into the mudflap/trim piece and there's not enough room for the bolt washers or even a socket to tighten. The sliders are on the appropriate side. Any advice or guidance on this would be really appreciated.

My Trd also doesn't have a threaded hole for the bottom slot on middle bracket. It's just oversized for the bolt. My package did however include two larger bolts that seem self tapping (at least on the tip). Maybe those are meant for that hole?

i just ordered the super sliders for my TRDP. did you have to cut the trim piece?
 
I also only had 5 threaded holes, lined up perfectly. I didn't have any problems with customer service because I never needed to contact them. They bolt to the frame and that is all. I ordered the sr5 specific ones and didn't have to cut anything. I did take the tiny mudflaps off though.

I installed a set of Super Sliders on my new TRDP recently and did not have to cut any trim. I did need remove the small mud flaps in front of the rear wheels though. no big deal. At first I reinstalled the small mud flap screws to close the holes back up, however the sq tubing was close to contacting the screw heads so I removed them and installed the sliders. There were only 5 threaded locations on each frame side that I could bolt to, the lower middle hole was unthreaded. I've since removed the sliders again, enlarged the holes a little and installed m8x 1.25 nutserts in the previously unthreaded holes. They worked great and the sliders remounted with out any problem.
Also, I wanted to mount the sliders up close to the body for a clean look, but had to leave some gap between slider supports and the underside of the body to allow for body flex on the frame without having the sliders contact the body.
 
Does anyone have pics of the how far the super sliders stick out on a 5th gen TEP or TRDP. I like the look of the sliders and the seeming functionality. But the family also needs them as a step.

With my rocker panels and foot, it is easier not to use them as a step. They hardly stick out. Not sure about trail editions though.
 
I wonder if there is a way to safely add a 1/2in to 3/4 in spacer. [MENTION=47340]Titanpat57[/MENTION] do you have pics of your welded steps?

I added a 1/4" spacer behind mine to bring it out enough to clear my cut rockers. Just a flat plate with holes drilled and get longer, high-grade bolts.

Easy.
