So I deployed to South Korea for a while recently. I had a driver take me to the train station on my way out of the country and his Kia or Hyundai or whatever it was had an interesting feature. All of the side and rear windows had a mesh sun shade that could roll up or down manually. It raised and lowered from the top edge of the door. In other words, when rolled down, it wound down / retracted into the door, and the little plastic "latch" on the top of the shade that you used to hook onto the top of the window would keep the whole thing from falling through.
Of course, it had a very nice OEM look and feel to it. But it got me thinking this couldn't be that hard to do custom. You don't need a huge gaping cut through the plastic door cover; just enough to slip the shade itself through, and enough space on the inside of the door to hold the roll in place securely. Of course, it may not work, but I thought I'd pop off the plastic door cover and see if there's a way to make it work.
But no point in even doing that if I can't get the parts. Below are a couple pictures -- the first is a Hyundai Santa Fe rear side window, and the second is a Honda Odyssey. It'll give you a sense of what I'm talking about and how/where it comes in and out of the door.
These are obviously custom shaped for the specific car model. Has anyone ever seen anything like this that might work for a 4th gen 4Runner? Anyone ever done a mod like this?
