roof rack accessories

So I got Yakima universal roof rack mounts. And mounted the quick fit clamps and have a harbour freight $7 shovel on it. Don't know yet if I'm feeling the big mounts. They are big !! What do you guys think ? Do you think its clean install ? Also the Ax is mounted on different mounts. Its basic cable clamps from home depot around $2 each.

I like the axe side better than the shovel side mounts. What kind of basket is that and how much did you get it for? I'm looking for baskets and I like the style of that one.

And no, no lock, shovel is only $7 and ax is only $7. Plus If you in emergency, there's no time to be unlocking things. Just step out and losen the straps.

You got any better ideas of how to mount the quick fist ? I'm open for ideas.

I like the quick release idea! If someone wants that shovel, they can have it! My only concern is mounting on the outside of the rack, and noise. If the mount is quiet, whoohoo! I rock crawl so the trees like to rub off anything that is on the outside of my rack, of course I'm wider and taller.

how about flipping the shovel and axe so it will sit inside the rack for better support. I would not trust a $7 HF rubber strap going 70mph on the interstate, also it would be harder for someone to steal it. Or get a heavy duty locking mounts, but it looks good.

Straps are from west marine $15 each clamp holds 20lbs. I tested it out by going 80mph so far so good. I'm really not worried about someone stealing the shovel.

Can anyone share some photos of theirs ? And how they did.

Honestly, going down the parkway at 80mph no noise what so ever. I'm just curious of what people think of how the two mounts look. The bigger beffier one is Yakima mount. The other is just a cable clamp. Both hold up great at high speeds. ..... I wouldn't really know how to lock it up though.

The axe clamps look cleaner and look like they wouldn't get in the way of anything you would load in the rack. I would cut the bolts back on the Axe Clamps so they wont cut or scratch up stuff you load in the rack. The shovel clamps look like they overhang into the rack load area.
Both look like they suit their purpose well though.

Thanks .. I was actually thinking of cutting a piece of alluminum strip metal , length of the quick fist strap. And have that behind it so it has solid supper behind it. One think I like about Yakima mounts is they are stronger vs the Axe mount. But I'll prob switch it up to the Axe mount. Cleaner look and save those or something else.

I really like the mounts and if I had a roof basket, I would probably pick some of these up. As far as size of the mounts go, I noticed you said they were universal. With them being universal, you have to consider that they need to fit most thing, big and small, and be able to support their weight. I think they look size appropriate on the shovel and maybe a little big on the axe but not enough to bother me.

For starts i want to say i really like the idea, but.... not having a locks on the gear is really really really really really not the best option in my opinion. Axe = $10 bucks (if that). Windows, and gear inside = $$$$

I wouldn't recommend leaving any hammer like object thats not secured with a lock within arms length of anyone that could pass by my rig and utterly destroy my windows. Just a thought.

However if you were to just have them out when you were rolling around or on a trip then i'm sure you'd be fine, but if you just have them up all the time invest in some kind of lock.

I like it, and the mounts you used. If I were to do it I would change just a few things.

1. Remove Hatchet and buy an Axe (long handle). If you ever have to actually use it on the trail you will thank me.
2. Use Axe and Shovel so they're not so shiny and remove store stickers
3. Put Axe on passenger side of rack to balance out the look

Looks good. I agree with what "mountain mike" said. I'd go with the longer handle. Otherwise a hatchet could fit in your rear side storage container. The best thing about shinny new equipment is also the worst thing... it draws attention... especially if it's not locked. But this looks much cleaner. Mine only has wing nuts with a cotter pin (sp?) and I've not had any issues for the last three years... but then again my shovel isn't new and shiny

Awesome. Thank you for the tips guys. I will definitely take your advice and get an Axe "long handle" and balance out it out by putting it on the other side. I think I will keep the Yakima mounts. Because they are strong and very easy to use. As for the other two custom mounts. Today I had little bit of extra time and I fabed up a little custom washer/plate. Its out of aluminum and I drilled a hole. This makes it so the quick fist has a flat surface to mount to and transfer some weight. Check it.



And I flipped the shovel the other way. The reason why I had the shovel the way I had it in first pic was because the tip was hitting the rack. Stupid finally realized if u flip it and bring to the curved end of the roof rack it will clear it without any problems haha. I know I'm.dumb.


Funny thing about the long handle Axe. I was debating at the store which one to buy. But looks like from your expierence. Long handle is better. Thanks.... And you can't even tell that the little aluminum plate is behind the clamp. And believe me. It adds some strength to it. Much less flexibility on the clamp that goes around the roof rack. And also added another rubber oiece to the clamp so it tightens better around the roof rack.
